After the Autocross this past saturday I was merging onto the 91 West and hit a friggin deep pothole on the passenger's side. What happened? I guess it shook violently enough to bust two bolts fron my front swaybar mount on the body. Holy crap! That would explain the thunk I hear every time I hit a bump.
Click to view attachmentThis was after dropping the front end about ½" and moving the droplinks inward about 1½" inward on stiffness. The car handled great until this happened!

And... get this... A busted engine mount could lead to some serious issues. Driving home today I had an epiphany as 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th were somehow missing from my shift pattern. You should not track your car at all with a busted engine mount. I'm running the solid trans mounts in the rear, got a pair of 911 engine mounts to replace them with which I'll be doing later this evening. Observe:
Click to view attachmentIt seems even my little 1.8 has enough torque to bust shit loose. V8 in disguise?
Was doing burnouts in L.A. last month and popped an engine mount. I plan on going with solid engine-to-bar mounts, then running 911 sport engine mounts from the engine bar to the body (a-la early method). That may take time, I have a pair of good stock 914 engine mounts that should go in tomorrow.

The dirt may be the only thing holding the drivetrain in right now.

The tranny mount isn't "busted", it just came apart. I'd sure take a look at the front mounts, 'cause it looks like the motor shifted forward some. The Cap'n

I agree the motor just shifted due to your front mounts. As for the sway bar, pick up an Engman kit and that should take care of that problem. I think I have a front engine mount brand new for your car, you were going to get it last time you were here.

to my untrained eye, it sure looks like the motor & tranny moved backwards, not forward ...
but what do i know?

Spot on Andy. I already have the mounts for the front, they go in tomorrow.
Scott, I totally forgot you had that mount. I'll be able to put my car on a rack tomorrow and get mine knocked out.

Actually, the engine and tranny stayed where they were
The car went forwards

sideshifter + solid engine to bar mounts + sport outer mounts? sounds like the bar will bounce around now, and the shift rod (if you remember) passes through the bar (which WAS stationary)
12 pack of guinness says you will have shifting issues due to the shiftrod interfering with the now movable engine bar.

Hey Jim, how long's your 914 been on the road?
Does anyone make a 'semi solid' stockish engine mount for 4's?

Correct me if you've done the testing... But stock /4 engine mounts (soft rubber) are a lot squishier and plyable than 911 engine mounts. If anything it would be less flexible than stock /4 mounts. There would also be the option of going with 964 engine mounts which are hydraulically filled if I wanted the 'ultimate' comfort. As for their rigidity m unsure. But so far 911 engine mounts in my experience are stiffer than later 914 engine mounts.

someone explain the benefits of solid mounts, both f&r, to me. esp running them both at the same time. they must be a real joy 500 miles into a day of driving.

basically they help with shifting... They keep the engine and trans fixed in relation to the body and shift bar. Another benefit... They transfer a lot of vibration and noise to the body so they shake all your nuts and bolts loose for you

so you can row thru like a verticle gate shifter and bang gears huh? i'd get a mustang for that. if that rear mount is an indicator, i'd say the vibration factor is 100% effective. lucky you didn't ruin your car...very lucky.

Brando,
How about a set of semi solid nylon late style engine mounts from JWest Engineering? Or take Joe Ricards do-it-yourself suggestion and cut and stack some discs from a nylon-plastic cutting board? Just rambling here...
