So I have a 74 Capri that has been sitting a while. The gas tank is full of varnish and rust.

I called around and got a quote to boil out the tank for $200!!!!

Does this seem normal? I have never had to have a tank boiled out, but $200 seems excessive.

I am in Los Angeles, near LAX if anyone has a reference for a good shop to do this.

Thanks!

I took mine to a radiator shop around the corner from my shop ran me 75 cash to have him clean it. came out looking new inside. i believe he used high pressure hot water and some other cleaning agent

Where is "around the corner?"

Was that also sealing the tank? We've sent out tanks to a radiator shop & had them boiled & sealed.

The $200 quote was for testing, cleaning and sealing. I think I could care less about the sealing part though, unless someone convinces me otherwise.

dump the fuel into a can and dispose of it.
Take the tank to a radiator shop and have them boil it.
That is all.

Take it him, fill with water, set overnight..see if it leaks.
If it does, weld it up.
If not, dump water, dry tank, paint, done.
