Short answer is yes. Especially on a 914/6. You could probably get out for 300-400 for a 911, but the 6 is tricky for valve adjustments. Depending upon your valve covers, your mechanic may have to lower the engine a bit to do it, which adds to the time involved.
Then you've got 8-9 quarts of oil and a filter to go along with it which comes close to $100 most times depending on your oil preference.

Plus if the motor wasn't prepped for 914 duty with timing markings, finding TDC for each cylinder can be a pain.
