Here in Virginia, we have an Antique tag option for those who don't want to pay annual car taxes on recreational vehicles and want to keep the annual vehicle inspections at bay; better know as the Virginia State scams. Just as long as one has a part to get,"Thats right officer, I'm getting a light at Advance Auto Parts," your good to go within 200 miles of your home address of pure driving pleasure and not towing. We have the Shanadoah Valley which is hilly and winding and thats a huge plus. If there was a state, which one would be the best for 914s?

the best state is canada,,LOL ontario to be more precise at least 6month per year , the plates are 60$ per year no matter what thevalue of the car , for the regular plate , if you go historic with the 1 time fee, you get restricted to secondary roads ( like its a disadvantage with a 914 ) the car is more than 20 years old , so no biannual emisson testing,, the bad is the 6 months of snow,,LOL

I've been gone from Welland Ontario for about 15 years and you have just tought me something other than that four letter snow PITA. Here in Virginia, you could drive during the cold winter months and have 90% of it snow free. I thought I went to heaven the last few winters if thats what they call them here.

Ohio is not bad, better than some state, CO and KY. Around $60 for regular plates, no limitations, and all cars over 25 years are emissions exempt.
KY I think they just did away with emissions, but you have to pay an value tax(basically sales tax) along with your reg. fee every year.
CO you have to E-check every year or two. They do have collector plates which you can buy 5 years or reg at a time and get out of 4 e-checks. But you still have to do it, which I think could be though for you V-8 guys.

Having 2 w/ antique plates & living in the Shenandoah Valley I can honestly say I'm not avoiding my taxes... I paid my taxes on the Civic & the VFR & that's enough . Oh yeah, it's 250 miles, not 200.

As for driving, well... I went out this morning & hit 112 . Screwed up the video but I'll try again soon...

I'm from Ky originally. Every year you have to pay a tax on the RESALE value of your car, to get your registration renewed! That applies to all cars, boats & planes.

Here, in Pa, assuming your car is "collectable" - any car is over 25 years old, and you get it registered as such, you don't have to pass safety OR emissions tests. And Pa is really tough on these things - you don't see much junk on the road here. But, you're not supposed to drive the car after dark. Haven't tested that yet.

However, today, on my way to the local farm to get local goodies, I sat at a traffic light next to a '76 Eldorado, with collecotr plates. Had the oversized front grill, a ton of rust, fake convertible top & was belching out blue smoke. Somehow, I don't think that is the "spirit" of the law.

When he cooked out of the parking lot, the noise was akmost (almost) as sweat as a 917K. Well, they ARE different noises, but either can make me almost wet my pants! Oh man, why did I ever go away from MoPar!

Virginia DE was this past week. My mechanic is an instructer, so he wasn't working on my car!

CO is pretty good. $25 a year that's paid every 5 years for collector tags. Once the car is registered with collector tags, no more inspection or smog checks every again so long as you own the car and keep the registration current.

So... once it's tagged... Any motor, or fuel injection system, or exhaust you want...

Georgia is not too bad, think my tag & tax is under $40 per year. No inspections at all for older cars. Rarely snows and no salt on the roads.

I was thinking about getting antique plates last time I was waiting for my inspection. But then the mechanic found a bad bulb I had wired backwards and was getting super hot.

I think I like having someone go over my vehicle (even in a limited way) and make sure nothing is crazy wrong.

Taxachusetts is not so bad.

No need for antique plates, no smog checks for cars 1983 and earlier so all 914's are welcome! Reg fees $41 every 2 years but you need to do a safety inspection every year for $29.

It just sux because the driving season is only about 6 months.

Colorado is easy. The state rules are almost non-existent, the counties make up whatever they want. Denver and Jefferson counties are almost the same, and like JHadler said.

If you have a PO box in Platte Canyon county, it's no smog check necessary because they're doofy farm folk. Register with the state five years at a time. 43 bucks for 5.

From what I can see, we all have it pretty good.

California is pretty friendly to '75s and earlier.

In the UK (where I'm from) you'd have to pass an annual inspection, plus deal with a lot of rain and lots of salt on the roads. The annual inspection in the UK is pretty strict... everything has to be working very well. As an example, the handbrake has to hold the car on an incline after 2 or 3 clicks.

I moved out of my home state of Virginia about 20 years ago. Too much BS with car stuff back then, not to leave out being taxed to death and no jobs in the blue ridge area worth doing.

Here in Ohio for antique plates you pay one low fee. You don't have really any restrictions. They also let you use period license plates, that get attached to your antique plates. I have 1973 plates on mine. There are also no mileage quotas, driving after dark crap and the like. We don't have inspections in Columbus as our government and the people hate them and as I hear will be closing inspection centers in Dayton and other areas.

Honestly, I could care less whether the registration is $50 more or less per year. The best place to own a 914 is where it is not too hot, not too cold, not too rainy, fairly dry (low humidity), and no snow (or salt), so that you can enjoy your 914 all year around. S.F Bay Area along with many other places meet this description.

BTW: I pay around $50/year registration. No smog or inspection.

Good idea! If I didn't wreck the Beater I'd be there. Just fixed it to reasonble par just to beat it up again hence the name "The Beater".

I have both my 914s registered as regular vehicles. Too many restrictions on antique or classic cars like no driving at night and no driving to work. $36 each per year for registration, no emissions for cars over 30 years old.

Yearly inspections are about $17-20. I don't mind the inspections since if you can't pass inspection, your car has some serious issues. Inspection issues I've run into have been burned out light bulbs, bad ball joints/tie rod ends, worn brake pads/rotors/tires; all major safety issues.

I have Haggerty insurance for both, $91 per year per car.

The agreed value for both cars is $5K. I hooked up with Hagerty through a local insurance guy. On my statement, the Service and Claims # for Hagerty is 800-922-4050. When I had just the 71 insured through Hagerty, it was $119. When I added the 74, the premium jumped to $182. I guess they figured I couldn't drive both at the same time.

California SUCKS! Don't even think of bringing your 914 to this state. Stay away. This is the most terrible state in the union. If you know anyone who is considering moving to California, have them PM me and I'll explain why they should never come here. If you have a 914 it must be painted black or yellow or it can't be brought in to the state. No kidding. It's true. Plus you can only drive a Porsche on weekends no more than 10 miles a day. DON'T EVER MOVE HERE.

washington is pretty easy. no emission tests for my 914s. i forget the cutoff year. with a car that requires a test, as long as you pass, there's no visual inspection. collector plates are a flat $35 one time fee. they come with restrictions. no errand driving (riiiight), to and from events or shows only (riiiight),..."i'm trying to dial in my carbs officer" will be my excuse if i ever get pulled over. one of perry's umbrella tops solves the parking in the rain issue. little or no de-icing during the winter. cloudy days cut down on the dash top cracking. it rains all the time, mark/computersfor kids will confirm this. please, move to so-cal and enjoy the sunny weather.

AZ is good. If you get your car insured as a "classic" car you have no inspections at all. Not sure about the price of tags... cant get a registration till I can prove the car exists, which is hard when it is on jackstands... Also it only rains for about 10 days a year and they are all in August when it is too hot to drive with no AC anyway.... No road salt though!
