Porsche crash that killed pair of close friends
Men were returning from fireworks display at casino

Mario Payette was three kilometres from his Cantley home early Thursday when he lost control of his Porsche. It skidded 50 metres, hit a curb and went through a cedar hedge before coming to a stop on its side, its roof crushed on an old tree on Des rables Road.

Mr. Payette, 40, and his passenger, good friend Stphane Brazeau, 33, were pronounced dead at the Gatineau Hospital.

Both men lived in the same neighbourhood and each ran his own excavation company. Both were fathers of young children who lived life to the fullest.

They were returning from the Lac Leamy Casino, after watching the Russian fireworks display. For reasons still unexplained, just before 2 a.m., Mr. Payette lost control of the 2006 Porsche Cayman he bought last fall. The sports car grazed a telephone pole and tore through a tomato garden before striking the tree.

It made a horrible sound, said ric Beaudry, who lives next door. He was outside at the time, as his brother, Steve, had just dropped him off and was driving away.

As the Porsche careened toward the curb, it came within inches of his brother's car, recalled Mr. Beaudry. "There was smoke everywhere," he said.

Lieut. Raymond Brazeau of Gatineau police said speed was a factor. Collision investigators were analyzing the rubber marks on the pavement until 8:20 yesterday morning.

Soon after, a friend set up a wooden cross where Mr. Brazeau left the road. A permanent marker was attached to it and by mid-afternoon the memorial was full of messages left by the men's family and friends.
