i searched for a bit couldn't find a specific answer tto this one:
when replacing the cap (part with the wires attached), there is some "play". it seems it can be rotated like 8 degress clockwise or count-clockwise...does its position affect timing? seems like the two retaining clips do not make for a very accurate retaining device if it does...
anyway, after replacing the cap my engine seems to be running just fine, but i just wanted to make sure...
thanks

The play in the cap doesn't make a difference with timing. The timing is between the crank (thus shaft of the distributor) and the points/pertronix which are solidly attached to the distributor body.

The cap merely places the rotor under the right plug wire contact to fire the plug. As long as the rotor and the plug contact on the cap are close when the points open, the plug will fire.
