I am doing my first engine rebuild and just about ready to seal the case halves back together. I've watched Jake's video about five time and it is really helpful. I did a test run and the case halves gout about a cm apart and would not go any further. When Jake did his they went togother much easier. Is this normal or is there some things I should be looking out for? Once I get the sealant on the case I want to get it together reasonably fast? Any tips from more experienced rebuilders is appreciated!

Are the front and rear bearings properly seated on their dowel pins?

Check yer main bearings and make sure the pin in the main bearing bore is indeed in the hole for the pin the bearing, and that you haven't dented the main bearing

Deform that bearing and the crank will rotate tight now and crap out later.

Check the main bearing box to ensure the outside of the main bearings aren't oversized and larger than the bearing saddle The bearings can be oversized .010 or .020 oversized to match with an align bore of the bearing saddles.

Randy, I think they come as part of the gasket kit sets that are commercially available.

Take a flashlight and look through the cylinder bores to make sure that the bearings are seated properly. One that I found will rotate and cause you a problem is the front cam bearing. This is a thrust bearing and as the cam turns slightly it will walk out of its seat. Jake suggests tapping the cam two or three times with wooden dowel and a hammer to clearance the cam bearing. I know it sounds imprecise but it worked perfectly for me. Do not torque the case bolts to get it to seat until you have made sure all of those bearings are properly seated. Failure to do this results in broken cases. Trust me. You don't want that. sad.gif

Yup. They're plastic star shaped things that snap onto the bolt shank, and then find their way into the overbored holes in the case halves when they come together.

Thanks guys! I have a set of the original vibration dampers if you are interested? My rebuild gasket set with with a set of new ones!
