This past weekend was a blast,

Thought I'd post some pics of the cars.

For those that didn't go,there were no less than 12 917's there, and if you notice in the pics, there were NO ROPES to stay behind when us tourists were looking and milling around.

I dare anyone to name a time that they could spend in a garage like this and not have an escort.Huh.

There was easily 750-1000 race cars there to drool over. That was the best 60 bucks I've spent in a weekend.

More drool material.

engine pics.

How about the 16cylinder car. That one was flown directly from the Porsche museum in Stuttgart. That car was THE ONLY ONE EVER MADE,and no armed guards to protect it.

Here's the 16cylinder car.

How close can you get to get a pic.

It was 1972 I think??? Riverside Int'l. Raceway CanAm race. You could walk through the garages, no problem. I remember George Follmer standing by his 917 looking bored; Said "Hello" while my friend and I walked around the car. Got to see all the cars up close and personal. Things were quite different in those days.

Nice photos! I'm really kicking myself for not making it down there!

Our shop had a few customers that shipped their cars down for race/show.

The customer I talked to was still excited 2 days later, said it was an experience of a lifetime. I would have loved to have made it.

Hey Andy,
One of the cool parts of this weekend was the autograph signing session.
There were no less than 60 famous drivers, past and present that set up to do an autograph session.

Notice George Follmer's name on the 917 list.

It was 25 bucks a ticket per table as a charity drive.I managed to get a ticket to each of the 3 tables of drivers, and had each table of guys sign my poster in a different color Sharpie. There were really nice cheerful talkative guys.To bad I forgot to take a pic of the third list, but it was about 25 more people. Some names I remember were Patrick Long,Timo Bernhard,Rod Millen,David Donahue,Denise McCluggage & a few others.
There's probably 75 auto's on my poster.I doubt there will ever come a time again that that many famous drivers can ever get together like that.

I never tire of seeing pics of the 917.

It looks as if the factory almost emptied out the museum to display the cars at Daytona. The first two LeMans winners for Porsche were there....talk about priceless! Kudos to all who brought their Porsches, from the landmark 917s to the club race 356s, 914s and 911s. More thanks to all who have contributed photos,....my Porsche Rennen file is expanding exponentially.

Ron,

Sounds like it was a great event. The '72 Riverside CanAm I remember Denny Hulme, Michael Parks (ran a Ferrari 512), John Morton, Charlie Kemp, David Hobbs.........Heck half the drivers on both lists were there, as I recall. I was just trying to point out how approachable both the drivers and cars were at that event. My buddy an I spent the night in a van in the infield. Place was absolutely packed with fans. Sad that the races normally don't attract that kind of spectatorship anymore. RIP Riverside.

Here is a 1969 917K on the grid, ready to hit the track. Chris MacAllister drove it to a 3rd place finish in the Weissach group race on Sunday.
