I was looking for a Frankfurt for the car to replace a circa 1993 blaupunkt
pull-out radio. then a fellow teener contacted me with his original
dealer-installed 8 track. Upon receiving it, I had to replace the drive belt to
get it working, but I couldn't get the static to go away. so I found an NOS
8track player on ebay that was very similar to the dealer-installed version
I had. So I installed that one instead and it sounds amazing. the repro dash
material doesn't quite match perfectly but it's close.

I have a half dozen tapes coming my way. Granted I can't get most of my
favorite band in 8track format, but I can get alot of my "easy listening" favs...
like james taylor, neil diamond, tom jones, and even some good old Kiss.

I never though I'd run an 8track in one of my cars but the car is so original
that I thought it would be a great addition to my 72.

agree.gif What a great look for such a classic like the 914. You could always have an ipod in the glove box that plays through your system for versatility.

What the hell is an 8 track? Some kind of new hard drive?

I have the Rock n Roll Over album from Kiss on 8 track that I can send to ya, if I can find it.

Do you have the original speakers too? I do in mine and they still aren't too bad.

I'll take any 8track donations. beer.gif

most of the tapes Im buying are NOS still factory wrapped. so coupled with
the NOS player, it should sound as they did back then. I have 5x7 speakers
that fit the mounting points in the speaker surrounds... so if they aren't original,
they are close to it.

I was planning on having a 'dummy' stereo in the dash and run my ipod, but
I have warmed up the idea of actually using the 8track.

I think I finally understand why my wife calls me a dork idea.gif

Are you going to ad a reverb too? Makes surf tunes (Dick Dale, Ventures, et al) sound great.

Wow, what a time capsule. Had the standard selections of the day in 8 track; Chambers Bros, Steppenwolf, Love, etc. Now all a faint memory...... :-(

I am going the opposite direction - (10 inch monitor, gps, diagnostics, dvd, etc), but that is way cool - ka chunk - I found like 1200 8 track tapes on e-bay. You need some deep purple. I think I got some cheech and chong and some other stoner crap on 8-track. I will look...

The drawback to the old 8-track tapes was the size. I had quite the collection back in the day, I think I had about 300+ tapes, could only take about 10 or so with me at a time as that is all the cases held back then.

I put an indash CD/MP3 player in mine, 10 hours of music on 1 CD plus a plug in for my 80g Ipod. The limits are endless.
