Launching at the start of Prologue.

No photos from Day 1 because on the second stage the clutch fork became detached from the bell housing - something I fixed 2 years ago and the mechanic decided to unfix when he rebuilt the box before the event. So it was box out and back in afternoon of day 1.

This is Carrickalinga, a really fast stage. We are at about 200kph.

I didn't pick any of the day 4 photos. We ended up down the field after scoring 3 hours of late time on Day 1, but apart from that it was a blast as usual.

Very nice Howard. Ever drive a left hand drive 914 to compare?
Downunderman
No, never a lefty teener.

I have a about an hour of video. I just have to get it off the camera. Probably on the weekend.

never seen one before.
Any idea how many 914s there are in AU? Just had friends in from SYD and they had
PeeGreen 914
Nice pictures biggrin.gif That hood looks like it fits very nice. Where did you happen to get that from?
Downunderman
Moulded it off the original. The wheels are 15 x 7 Superlites with 205 x 50 tyres. Dunlop D03G full soft. They are not good on the track because they melt after 2 laps, but work well on tarmac rallies.
yeahmag
Did you need to do any work to get them to fit (the rims/tires that is...)?
Downunderman
No, but with the Dunlops (210 mm tread width) they rub on the inside just a touch, but not enough to worry about. The rear lips are rolled. I had them made with 25mm positive offset which gives a back spacing of about 125 mm. That part is a bit easier down here where they are made, but I think its a pretty standard fitment. Funny how this thread takes off a year later.

I was in Burnie in February, the day before the start of the Tasmanian Rally. I couldn't stay but did see a few of the cars. Have you ever run that?
Downunderman
No, but I have done Targa Tas a couple of times and the northern part of the course is the same as used in Rally Tas. What on earth possessed you to visit Burnie? At lease the weather is better in February. Most of the year its a windswept cold hole.

I was captive on a three week cruise and Burnie was one of the stops. We started in Auckland and finished in Sydney. Very enjoyable.

How quickly a year comes around. Third week in November made the annual pilgrimage 1600 km west. Here’s how it went.

Day 0- Prologue.
Fairly uneventful. Our main competition beat us for the first time ever by 0.01 seconds. I could have gone harder but I thought they were going to flog us by 3 seconds with their new ST setup and new motor. In any case it’s all froth and bubble to set the starting order and doesn’t count in the competition.

Day 1 Thursday
This turned out to be a bit of a debacle. Half way through the first stage; Upper Hermitage, I broke the universal in the shift linkage just behind the firewall when selecting first half way round an uphill hairpin. Very embarrassing. Anyhow, after pushing the car off the road, I purloined a bit of farmer’s fencing wire and hooked up the shift rod so it wouldn’t drag on the ground, waited till the competition cars all went through, selected first from under the back of the car and drove 15km in first until we found Nigel, the Irish mechanic.

We borrowed his workshop and welding kit and put it back together and re-joined for the afternoon stages.

Day 2 Friday

Pissed down rain all day. Reasonably competitive and took a few stages off the Girls, albeit down on power with a sometime 5 cylinder engine. Turned out to be a partially blocked main jet. Sliver of O ring from the seal on the rain hat mounting bolts found its way into the float bowl! How’s that for random?

How much to ship my 914 down under for the race?
idea.gif Andy
Downunderman
Yes it now awsomely quick, and that gives rise to the broader issue of risk management. It's great fun, but it's fuching dangerous; just look at the big muther gum trees going past. They don't give in at all. The adrenalin rush is fantastic, and thats what its all about. Not racing for sheep stations, just for fun. So we do it in a measured way, at least to the extent we can.

You know you're not going fast until you get a wheel off the ground.
SirAndy
How is your tire wear? From the looks of it, you can use some more negative camber in the rear ...

shades.gif Andy
Downunderman
It's got about 2 neg on the front and about 1.5 neg on the rear. Tyre wear is pretty even across the tread. I always start with a new set of full soft. There is about a third left by the end of the event.

Wow! Love the videos, so fast!! Thats the first time I have seen a 914 with the steering wheel on the other side, very cool !! Car sounds and looks wild, cool wheels too! Cheers
