After the last autocross, I started getting strong gas fumes inside. The strongest smell came from next to the tank on the fill side with what looks like an overflow leak down the side of the tank. Is it the gasket underneath the numerous bolts that's getting old? How do you know when its shot? Who sells the gasket?

I tightened the bolts down last time I replaced the lines but I think one of the bolts is stripped. Could this be my problem?

Any ideas?

I had the same problem and found that the fuel lines comming out the bottem of the tank were loose. I removed the plate covering the front underside of the car, tightened the nuts holding the fuel lines and the smell went away. Good luck!

Had similar problem with my 70 914. I finally decided to make a new gasket for the gas cap. Everything is fine now.

What did you make the gasket out of?

I have had fuel sloshing issues out of the overflow/vent opening up in the filler neck, under heavy cornering load (track) conditions. Severe fume problems. I just re-installed an overflow drain tube (fuel hose) and routed it down to the holes in the floorpan under the tank. Problem went away...I wish everything was that easy.
