My wife's laptop's sound card is acting up. She voice chats with her family using a mic and earphones. The mic part of the laptop quit working. The computer still puts out sound but those on the other end can't hear her.

We have tested the external mic and know it's good.

Any advice?

couple of ideas...
Try double clicking on the speaker icon in your system tray (lower right corner of screen), choose "options" then choose "properties." You should either have a drop down menu or bullet that you can choose your recording devices. You will now see the controls for all your recording devices...check to see if the sound level on your mic is not slid all the way down or muted.

If you have XP, you can also do a system restore to a time when the mic was working properly.

VOIP uses loads of bandwidth.
Wireless is not fast enough, a 100 meg card works the best.
Dont surf while talking, just use it as a phone while talking.
Dont use any other computers while she is talking either.
