West Coast Classic Rallye Shield
One for each entry car (entry# in the white oval)

Would make a cool piece of memorabilia...

Whadda ya think

cheers,

I like it. Can't believe I'm the only that looked at this. Great work!

I like it too.

Its wicked cool... cool.gif

But...

Each one would be unique artwork,. unless we found a place that could make them with unique numbers.

The other thought is that we couldnt sell any extras to people who just show up at the gate, or if we made extras, we might have to eat the extra plates.

I really like the idea...how big?...are they wearable pins?...simple stamped metal plates?...mountable emblems for the engine grille?...whats the preference?

I think a plate without the specific attendee number would be better, but they could be made up in a quantity sufficent to give only to pre-registered attendees...with a cut-off date for sign-ups.
Jeroen
Size would be something in the range of 12 to 15 inch (wide)

Most classic european rallyes provide this type of "numbershield" to their entrants
They're some kind of PVC/plastic that is screenprinted
The "unique" numbers could be done seperately in vinyl and stick 'em up
Usually they're zip-tied to a bumper or a grille
Pro: Prolly cheaper in big quantities
Pro: cool piece of memorabilia after the event (garage wall decoration)
Con: How to stick 'em on a 914

Other option would be to have them done in vinyl all together
Pro: Easy to apply (don't think there's much zip-tieing oportunities on a 914)
Pro: Relatively cheap in a small quantities
Con: Prolly more expensive in larger quantities (compared to printed shields)
Con: Once you take 'em off the car... they're thrashed (no memorabilia)

cheers,

Jeroen
seanery
you could print em on a magnetic surface = more cost
or you can put them behind the passenger seat in the rear window. I'm sure we could come up with some way to attach them there.
Jeroen
I found a printer here that specializes in these shields
I'll give them a call to check prices...

cheers,

Jeroen
seanery
any word on pricing?
Jeroen
Nope... I'll get off my lazy ass (well, sorta lazy) and make some calls

cheers,

Jeroen
seanery
As far as attachment goes how 'bout this?
The gray area at the top is a hole. We supply a small bolt and washer with the proper thread for the rear tow eye.
Jeroen
Ideally, I'd like to put 'em up front somehow...
If we're outta luck there, I think the rear window would be a good option (behind the seat - no chance of loosing it either)

cheers,

Jeroen

I like the magnet idea. they can't be that expensive. I just received one in the mail today with a calender printed on it. It's a free promo from an accounting firm. It measures 6"X4" or 150mm X 100mm. I think this size would fit on the rear panel. Or they could be that Vinyl our club stickers are made of.
JeffBowlsby
Jeroen, I am really glad this thread was revived, I think the rallye plates are a super cool item. There is a certain vintage and european quality to them and it would set our club apart.

You had provided pricing on them as I remember and they were not that expensive. Can you update me on options, pricing and availability? bowlsby@aol.com

I like the idea of attaching them to a bolt through the rear tow bolt location, but that would never happen on a real rallye car. They could also be attached to the front license plate bolts so they would not require removal of the front license plates (which are required here in 914 paradise), or even to the front fog light grille bolts. We can figure that one out I am sure.

What will it take to make these happen?

Jeff
Jeroen
I just called the firm that prints the rallye shields, they would e-mail me prices...

I'll keep ya posted

Jeroen

Plastic screen printed is ok, but are they available in say painted, embosssed metal? I know it costs more, but is painted vinyl our only option?

I only ask, because I would sure want to make something special out of it if possible. Every years event could have one a litteel different to memorialize the event and give it european cache. I could not get to sleep last night thinking about it on the cars.

I claim plate 001. cool.gif
seanery
metal painted is gonna get pretty pricey!
Jeroen
Just got the prices from the printer for the rallye shields

Shield is matte white polysterene 1mm thick
max dimensions 310 x 192 mm (cut to shape of the design)
prices for a 2 color print

50 pieces - $300 ( $6 each)
100 pieces - $350 ( $3.50 each)
200 pieces - $450 ( $2.25 each)

These prices are excluding dutch sales tax (19%), but my little company can eat that
I'll sponsor the shipping as well (hopefully, I'll bring them myself biggrin.gif)

Production takes 2-3 weeks
If I need to ship 'em, count on another 2-3 weeks
So the need to be ordered 6 weeks in advance to be on the safe side!!!

Lemme know what you think...

cheers,

Jeroen
seanery
Jeroen,

That pricing seems very good!

Don't eat the tax, we'll just add that as part of the price.
Jeroen
Don't worry about the sales tax. It's a little trick
biggrin.gif

cheers,

Jeroen
Jeroen
oh... we would still need vinyl numbers to stick on the shields though...

Check out these products you guys...especially for the dash/participation paques, acrylic awards and pins.

I hate their artwork (that is within our control), but they seem reasonably priced and good quality.

Wow. Looking great. The badge is a nice touch and it identifies the event participants, and will for years to come. Good prices too! Thanks.
JeffBowlsby
Jeroen...I have been giving the event plaque some thought. I like the idea of a rallye shield very much of we can attach it to the front of each car someway. At 1 mm thickness are they too flimsy? If this works, I would like to consider doing a real road rally as part of the event...next year...

Another thought would be to have a custom participants badge that we can zip tie to the front foglight grille areas. I think if it were about 3 inches (8cm) square or diameter, it would fit nicely on each car. It should be of good quality. The above website and others smight be able to do it right and not be too expensive.

Whaddya think?
seanery
Jeroen, can they do 2mil thickness?
seanery
Sorry, but I haven't had time to get to the logo.
Do we want the logo to be in the same style as the rallye shield, or do we want a different look?

Show us 3 or 4 designs. Not too many. It will turn into another month long debate. My post doesn't have a tone. But with the slow follow up on questions posted here it sometimes takes several days to get complete input. Any design idea's will be top shelf! clap56.gif

Ok, now for something completely different biggrin.gif

rallye shield #2

I like them all. Can I get mine in Olympic Blue?
seanery
dude, you rock!
I like the 2nd & 3rd ones.
VegasRacer
agree.gif I am impressed. pray.gif Great work Jeroen. clap56.gif

I vote for Rally Schild #2 for the plates and
the second one (adfasdf) as the official logo for shirts, trophys, etc.
rick 918-S
I like #2 I see the prices are listed on page 1 of this thread. I'll let you know how may we'll need for the trophy bases next week. This will nail down the cost for the trophies.
Jeroen
Ok, so what are we gonna do?

Here's some suggestions...

memorabilia
I like the participation-plaques that Jeff came up with
Lets say 2x3 inches with logo #2 on it
Bare aluminum with a red/black print should cost 1.56 each
(or should we have 'em in brass???)
These would make a great piece of memorabilia IMO

on the car
On top of that, we could do the rally shields
What bugs me about those is that it'll be a PITA to (securely) mount them
Instead, maybe we can do a big "racing style" sticker (say 20x20") with the event-logo and a big # and the major sponsors.
These would look just as cool (IMO) as the rallye shields and be of better use for the AX (easier to read the #'s)
I have no idea what those would cost though... can someone check on that (2 color print white vinyl)?
Or we could have the rallye shield as a sticker instead of a shield

awards
I like the acrilyc awards on the site that Jeff proposed
Trouble is the quantities. Minimum of 10
That way there isn't a possibility to print a unique text on each award (one for each class)

cheers,

Jeroen
(just blurting out ideas)
seanery
Jeroen, I think the problem with the circles is that they will pretty much get trashed when removed.
My "reusable" number circles where about 20 bucks, but they're not real reusable.
Jeroen
If we go for the stickers, I don't care much for the "reusable" factor
We have the plaques as memorabilia, so the main target for the shield/sticker would be visible recognition during the event.

A shield would have added memorabilia value, a sticker would add more visual effect.
If you're really carefull, you can usually peel the stickers off in one piece, if you want to save them.

With the stickers, at least we'd be sure they will be on everybodies car.
With the shields that may be a problem (different bumper styles, etc.)
It would be a waste if we can't really use the shields and they end up in the trunk or some other invisible spot during the event

cheers,

Jeroen
(just thinking out loud)
seanery
how about a decal that goes on the front windshield (like an inspection tag). That would be visible for the car show, etc..not much help on the a/x, but I don't think it's that necessary on the a/x.

The plaque idea doesn't do much for me, personally.
VegasRacer
I have never cared for the small 'dash plaques'. I've got a drawer full of 'em.
I think a larger plaque would be very nice as a piece of memoribilia.

I really like the 'Rally Shields'. (I know I am prejudice since I collect them. Maybe it's just a European thing.) I am sure we could figure out how to mount them. Even so - the numbers are kinda small and hard to read. Many people probably have their own auto-X numbers. There is always tape or shoe polish for the rest. I would like for us to do some item that can be put on the cars. Someone mentioned enamel badges. Are they affordable?

I would much rather have one really nice souvenir piece than several cheaper junk items that just get thrown away.

We are going to do shirts, aren't we?

(just my .02 cents)
Jeroen
QUOTE
Also thinking about the Rallye Shields more...if they were a thin/stiff plastic, mounting has been the concern. If we go this route, and if the rallye shields were not so large that a drivers vision were blocked (maybe ~4x6 inches?), they could be easily mounted inside the windshield glass with double stick tape. What do you all think?

I had previously proposed a smallish metal enamelled participation plaque, zip-tied to the foglight grilles or engine grille. I still like the idea of that, if its of high quality as it would be special and become 914 memorabilia. So would the Rallye Shield. Each year for future events, we could develop a unique plaque.

You guys decide, but lets only do one or the other, and agree to make them of high quality. The registration fees will cover the cost.

(part of Jeff's post in the thropy classes thread)

The rallye shield plastic is kinda similar to a credit card. Maybe a little more "flimsy" because it's bigger...

Maybe a heavy duty double sided tape would work to stick 'em to a hood or bumper. But I'm worried that if it's strong enough to hold it at high speeds, it's also strong enough to ruin someone's paintjob...?
Does anyone have any experience with this???

IMO anything smaller than the rallyshield would have very little visual impact (which is the main purpose of the shield... to be recognized as a participant)

I agree with Vegas' post above...
The "memorabilia-plaque" should be something that would resemble the plaques or badges that you sometimes see on the engine lid grilles of 911s and 356 (I believe PCA has them).
Those would look cool on a engine lid of a 914 or in your freak-cabinet at home biggrin.gif

Cheers,

Jeroen
seanery
I've tried to price these in the past and had trouble finding vendors to do it. Someone mentioned the Maveric region because they have them.
Grill Badges, right?
Jeroen
Yup...
JeffBowlsby
I posted this link a couple days ago...maybe we should contact them for pricing? Give em our artwork?

http://www.rallyeproductions.com/Auto%20Index.html
seanery
Jeff, their printing capabilities weren't very impressive. sorry.
Jeroen
Hey Jeff,

I've been going through that site quite a bit.
Prices look good, but there are no pictures of the actual plaques (which makes it kinda hard to judge them)
Maybe you could contact them for some samples?

Here's some other links...

I found them just by googling on 'rallye shields'...surely there are others who can do what we need?

QUOTE

Which is why I suggested that they be mounted to the 'inside' of the windshield...drivers side maybe, or even in the drivers side triangle glass? They would be cool on the engine grille or even mounted to the rear window or rear tow eye hole, but they really need to be visible from the front dont you think?
seanery
I don't think it matters exactly where they are, as long as they are all in the same place.
They won't serve a purpose in the A/X. The a/x at the ramble had a scorekeeper at the starting point to check off the driver's name. I think that is sufficient. It's not like a big track where we'd have 7-20 cars at a time on the track.

How about a 4" round sticker that goes on the front fender in front of the door? I'd leave one of those on if it were a nice sticker.
Jeroen
I wasn't as much suggesting a visual recognition of the #, but the event.
Specially if we are part of on ongoing event, it would be nice/good to set ourselves apart a little
Anything small won't do that...

Plus, if we do something bigger, we can print sponors on it.
Sponsors like that = mo money biggrin.gif

cheers,

Jeroen
