First Question
I have Cylinders marked at the Skirt
98ZN1 ++ W1 Mahle

How big are these??
I looked at Aircooled and Mahle and they dont list the part with these numbers.

Second...
I have found out that my differential is truely welded into a locker diff....Bummer
What are my options?
I have several old trannies I can take the diff out of...
I have heard I can put in a used 911 diff for a limited slip???

Third....
How would you go about figuring out the stroke of a motor without taking off a head.....???
If not, I will take off a head.

Thanx
Rich

1) This might help with your Mahle question:

2) If the 911 tranny had a positraction diff, and it was the right size, yes. 911 Posi's are only slightly less rare than 914 posi's. (If so, send it to me for testing! smile.gif Just snag one from any of the 914 trannys you have lying around. Or post a 'wanted' ad. (In the -wanted- section.)

3) Measure the crank throw. (oh wait, you have to take the heads off to split the case. Nevermind.)

If the engine is out you could put it on a stand, tip it on its side, put a cylinder to BDC and with a cc syringe fill it with light oil. Minus the volume of the combustion chamber then X 4 = CC

you should sell the tranny to me...
or trade with me for an open tranny...

seriously, what condition is the rest of the tranny in ?

Crazy stuff. Those are the rare 98mm Mahles. I bet you have aluminum cylinders also (with Nikisil)

I could have probably got more for the other engine huh.gif

If I take off the head.....

What would I look for to tell if they are Nikisil???
I assumed 98 mm, but I could not find that product anywhere....so......

I doubt it.
Its easy to tell if the cylinders are aluminum. They won't be rust colored.

Can't you just setup a dial indicator through the spark plug hole and measure the stroke by cycling the cylider from bdc to tdc?? I would do this rather than take the heads off if that's the only reason you're pullin' them? Just a thought confused24.gif

Never mind, I just realized if the plug holes are at an angle to the piston, the above won't work.....duh, too much time playing with 2-strokes!!

Cylinders are clearly aluminum.
Sorry Chris, no rust....just aluminum..
