My name is Lance Coren. I am an automotive appraiser.
I am researching a value for a "Totalled" 1973 Porsche 914.
I have not been able to find information on how to identify
the difference between a 1.7L & 2.0L engine in the serial
(VIN) number of the car.
The VIN of the subject car is: 4732902178.
Can anyone assist me in this regard.
Thank You!
Respectfully Submitted,
Lance

... from far, far away
there's no way to decode the engine type from the VIN
the only way is to order a COA from Porsche ...

You can look at the case number on the engine.

Look at the label on the left side of the engine compartment, usually right above the relay board. It will identify the engine as delivered.
The COA is expensive, and often either incomplete or inaccurate.
Other clues MAY be the presense of OE front and rear anti-roll bars. Many 1973 2 liter cars had them both. I don't recall seeing an original 1.7 with a factory installed rear bar, but they may exist. I was a 914 tech at a very busy dealership in 1973, and saw a LOT of cars come through my workspace.

The other trick is to look at the tire rating decal on top of the fuel tank.
If the tire rating says SR15 then it was a 1.7.
If the tire rating says HR15 then it was a 2.0.
