How much should I expect to pay for a solid, but not fancy 2.0, 2.2. or 2.7 6 engine? I'm looking for something that is "plug and play" without having to be rebuilt right away. I've seen prices from about $1,500 for suspicious looking turd box engines up to $12,000+ for full out race prepped ones.
Thanks,
Konrad

Its a crap shoot
I found a complete 74 2.4 MFI motor for $100 on Craigslist a few months ago, needs rebuild of course
Just got a supposedly good 74 CIS 2.7 for $1100, will let you know in a few weeks if it really is good! replacing gaskets/seals now.
Try not to spend big money on motors that you cannot hear run! they can all be cores!

I could help you make a tidy profit on your investment, how does $500 sound?

I found that for a clean running motor that doesn't need a rebuild tomorrow morning you can expect to pay 4-8k. Find somebody that is doing an upgrade and take their car and have the motor looked at. Then you can decide.

I bought an 89 3.2 from L.A. Porsche dismantlers, here in So. Cal. I paid $7000 which is about right for that year engine with just less than 70,000 miles. You might be able to find one cheaper, maybe in other parts of the country.

Konrad, Check out the engine that Blake built for one of our 914s. He removed it to build the car into a GT class SCCA racer . We're just over in Roswell.

Thanks y'all. I'll be keeping a lookout and saving my pennies. Just bought a new house with a 3rd garage for the 914 when the 4 cyl went "el morte"
Well, hopefully more like mortally wounded. Possible warped head and probably more
deeper in.
I figure if i'm going to spend the money on rebuilding it right, I might as well get a 6.

You roll the dice with any used motor. I have had some that I purchased for $1000-1500 and they are still running in 914-6's today (For years now) and had a couple that I purchased for similar prices that turded out on new owners after a short period.
You roll the dice my friend.

Although funny that is a reasonably accurate answer. I would even add that 12K for a well prepped race 6 is on the cheap side. You can dump off an easy 6 or 7 K just on the heads.
However, I would say that the best buys in the used engine world are ones that you can drive out and see run. A 2.7 for 1500 is a core! One that has been time certed with good head studs and JE or mahle pistons and cylinders a good set of cams and head work could easily fetch 8K + depending on the documentation.
I gave 10K for a 3.6 vram with 1500 miles from a dealer top end rebuild and 49K miles total on the engine. I also went out and looked at it while running and went for a ride. However, you could buy a 100K + mile 964 engine for 5K or under.
What I am getting at is that there is a lot of relativity in your question. A full blown race prepped 2.0 from the right builder, block, and head work could bring 20K! However, an unknown stocker could fetch 2500.
My advice would be to dial in on which engine you want, find it locally and go from there.

Konrad, I will be taking out the engine of my 914-6 in about a month for it's paint job, and may be interested in selling, as I have another (actually 2) to put in. It is a 2.7S motor that pulls well.

I know where there's a 2.8l-6 dual plug RS engine for $29,000.00, think it even has the 12 cylinder distributor on it. Supposed to be fresh. Pocket change, riiiiiggggghhhttt.
Budget
Engine $29,000.00
Cheerio's for couple of years.
On the serious side, most used engines as a minimum will probably need a top end, that's about $5-6k on top of the the price of the core engine.
Good Luck, Don

Apparently there's no shortage of 6 cylinder Porsche motors...
