I don't read Hot Rod, but I happened to pick up the 2/2008 issue at the barber's today. In it there is a short bit about a guy with a 914 V8 conversion in Chesterfield, MI. From the way it read, both he and the HR folks seemed to think this was an extremely unusual conversion, though he bought a kit from somewhere and had a beefed up transaxle and 911SC (?) suspension all around.
Maybe someone here knows the guy. FYI...
