My '71 914 1.7/2.7 has no working instrument lighting. I'm guessing the dimmer rheostat is shot.

I can't get my hand behind the dash to pull out the switch.

What is the best way to get the switch out?

- Pull the instrument panel?
- Remove the fuse panel?
- Remove the complete dash?
- Dynamite?

Thanks

I believe that I've gotten room to do that by removing the fuse panel. Two screws hold it up; you can let it dangle by the wires as long as you don't have any loose wires around there. A smart person would disconnect the battery first. (I'm not smart...)

Unscrewing what the manual calls the "escutcheon" (and I call a round flat nut) can be a bit tough. I can usually get it started by using a small screwdriver in one of the slots that extend out from the center hole, then use my fingers to push in on and turn the nut after it is started. You have to unscrew the knob first, of course.

I've taken off the knee pad to get more room as well.
