just thinking some of the best way to tacke rust. the PO striped the body of its paint and only primed the out side leaving the trunks, underside of the hoods " WTF.gif " and sills bare metal. since i've been able to start working on it again what it the best way to get that schiesse off. I've been thinking high grit sanding, navel gelly, and a grinder....

what have you used?

It depends on the extent of the rust damage. If it's just surface, a good polishing w/ a wire wheel should do the trick. If it's rusted through, you're looking at cutting it out and replacing it either by sheet metal repair or buying new pans or whatever it is you need.

rent a sand blaster and get it all off.

While a wire wheel does eliminate some of the rust, it will not get it all.
Sand blasting is really the only way I know to guarantee that the rust wont come back and bleed through the paint.

I have never had luck with any of the chemical stop rust treatments and I never use them anywhere that paint will be showing...under the car, sure thing...

yeah it's only surface rust right now.. biggrin.gif

the PO did a good number striping the paint from under side of the hoods and inside trunks... but the way the hoods are looking the rust got under those ribbs and are having a field day. the front trunk is just a light surface rust and orange dust. but the rear is a little worse sawzall-smiley.gif

i wonder if it will be cheaper to rent a sand blaster or buy one from harbor frieghts?

r_towle
a sand blaster requires a big compressor...so renting is sometimes better.

I have a hand held spot blaster that is awesome.

As far as the hood ribs go, if there is rust inside you have a few choices.

Remove the skin, sandblast the frame, re-apply the skin.
OR
Drill holes, use rust treatment inside the frames.
OR
Acid dip the whole hood.

On the surface, use some heavy grit sandpaper on a DA or random orbital sander, get it clean, then seal it immediately with epoxy primer.

Rich, where did you get the hand held sand blaster? Sounds like a handy
item to have.

H.A.M.B (Hokey Ass Message Board) has good write ups on this.
American Iron Guys get tons of field specimens that need the entire exterior cleansed of rust.

20 years ago I would have said it wasn't possible. Now I'm so out of shape & slow it would be pretty easy dry.gif

It just depends on how much effort you put into it, Rich. biggrin.gif So far I've had good luck getting rid of the surface rust w/ a wire wheel.

So just quit being lazy! biggrin.gif

I would honestly disagree.
Pitted rust (look with a magnifying glass or a microscope) cant be cleaned out with a wire brush unless the metal is smooth....

For the surface stuff I dont use a sandbalster cause then I need to spend alot of time sanding afterwards.
I use the 3m srungy pads on a high speed air grinder...those are awesome.
Way way way better than a wire brush...try one you will be addicted.
Home Depot sells them for a lower speed drill....you will love it.
These are specifically for metal prep and dont remove steel..just clean it.

Pitted metal has to many crevaces and holes to get into with anything on a rotary hand held device (I have tried all the cool stuff from 3m and others)
That is why I use a sand blaster.

Eastwood has them, probably harbor frieght also.
I think its called a speed blaster.

Could you re-check the spelling. I called Home Depot and checked Google...no match for "srungy". Thanks.

around the ankles is a good way to tackle, especially if they are big, a clothesline is pretty dramatic biggrin.gif

I'm not sure but he may be talking about these. They work very well.

I like 3M pads/Scotchbrite/wire wheel/DA sander/etc to get 99% of it off, then follow up with Metal Ready or some similar rust converter to hit all of the 'pits' Rich mentioned.

The other thread not too far down has some places to look on that. It talks about POR-15 vs Zero Rust and VS Bullit. Seems most of the guys liked Zero Rust.

I've got a whole pile of these in my garage. They work wonders on paint and rust.

I used it to strip the paint on the right rear fender, did it in no time. biggrin.gif
