hello, good to be here. im a new owner of a 72 914-4..im trying to id my engine.the # is W0126528 but it is located where the 2.0 id # would be and not on the rear of the motor where it should be for a 1.7..the build date of the car is 9/71 and it has a tail shift 5 speed..this is supposed to be a one owner original car..any clue why the engine id would be in the wrong location?thanks, mike

I'm intrigued by the color. Could you please post a picture of the karmann tag on the drivers side front door jamb? It has the chassis # and the paint code on it.

As Andy says, give us the details of the Karmann badge: paint code & body #. Also give us the VIN. Then I can compare your engine number to my list to see if the engine is likely to be original to the car.

i cant get a good pic right now because its dark, i did try to though.i did however write the info down im not sure what these mean so your help is very appreciated.ok the first # on the left door jam tag is 3939534 and the code under that one is L97G.....the vin # is :4722901196.that pic is bad it was too dark outside.it looks to be painted atleast twice and very poorly i might add.it is a darker orange now but it used to be a lighter orange almost yellow..thank you thank you

All 1972 cars should have the EA engine.
That is a pretty early 1972, and the paint was originally Gold. Pretty rare. I only have four other L97G in my list.

thanks for all your info. cool to know.im thinking its a motor out of a vw411 because it is missing the holes though the shroud for mounting the heater blower motor.it supposed to be the same as a 914 1.7 so thats cool i guess..
