To help people over time.

What are the differences for a stock 4 cylinder car?
We have two different strut housings, but are the inserts different for each one?

Pics and some details would help people in the future trying to determine what part is correct for what year etc.

Konis also.

Let's start with the basics:

It's "Bilstein" ...

And no, there's no "Steen" in there either, it's pronounced like that big german beer mug you all like to drink out of:

beel sh-t-eye-n (Just as the word "shine", but imagine a "t" in it)

This does not cover what NEW parts will fit in what strut housing.
That is the continuing question...which strut will fit in what housing.

Early and late struts use the same shock UNLESS they came with Bilstein struts. The stock Boge strut will accept Boge, Koni or Bilstein that are designed for the Boge strut. The Bilstein strut used a different strut insert and had a rolled pin holding it in the lower portion of the housing.

Was this part of an option group? Could you even get Bilsteins on a 914-4 from the factory? From the dealer?

I called billstein forever ago when i bought some shocks...

They have HD and SPORT

sport has shorter shafts, for slightly lowered cars. And different valving.
HD is more of a stock replacement
