I just went and looked at a really solid '72, but the only problem is the guy swears up and down that the engine is a 2.0L WTF.gif . I know they only offered 72-4's with 1.7 L. Is there and easy way to identify exactly what motor is in there so i can prove hime wrong and bring the price down a bit?

VIN # 4722920972

Engine number? Number of bolts attaching the intake manifold to each head? Throttle body horizontal or vertical? Air cleaner housing rectangular or round?

A 2.0 liter motor will have the following items to look for.

Engine serial number is on the case just in front of the oil filler.
The heads have three studs for the intake tubes.
The plugs are facing the side of the motor, not upright.

The 1.7 has the following items.
Engine serial number is on the top of the case under the intake plenum.
The heads have four studs for the intake tubes
The plugs are facing up and angled front and back.

The FI may have been changed.
If not
The 2.0 liter has a center throttle body aimed at the sky with a large rectangular air filter box.

The 1.7 has a throttle body facing the drivers side rear.
The air filter housing in roundish...

a 73 2.0 air filter is round (but unlikely anyway).

i would check the engine #'s over the just the 3 stud heads as it could be a bus 2.0... but definately note it's got the wrong heads then
