Hello 914 Community,
my Name is George and i´m from Germany.I´m the Owner of a 1973 914, 1,7 L.
I would like to do my own Conversion with a 2 Liter EJ 20 Subi Engine (no Turbo).
I think, it´s a good way to create a Car with a modern Engine and a little more Power in an old, beautiful Body.
We don´t have in Germany many Guys with 914 Subis, there are more Friends of T3 Conversions.So i´m looking here for Informations to do that Job.Maybe some Members here have done it with an EJ 20 Engine so maybe they can give me Informations about doing the Wiring Harness and the Cooling System.
I hope to get interested Contacts here.

Some websites you should know:

www.renegadehybrids.com has a complete kit to use a turbo engine for $2000. Since yours is non-turbo you'd be interested mostly in their radiator kit, which is $1000. It was developed for Chevrolet V8 conversions, so is proven, well done, and more than adequate for a naturally aspirated Subaru.

www.smallcarperformance.com do mostly conversions of watercooled Vanagons, Synchros and such, but a lot of those conversion parts are useful for the 914 swap as well. Especially interesting is their engine mount (for non-turbo conversions) which when you use just the side pieces lets you mount the front of the engine onto the stock 914 engine mount bar.

www.outfrontmotorsports.com are a Subaru into sand buggy specialist, but of course a lot of those cars are VW based, so their parts also fit pretty well with the 914 conversion. They also have good info on their website, are increasingly aware of these engine swaps into street VW's and 914's and so are interested and very helpful with information, etc. They have a lot more that what appears on their website, too, so they're good to call and talk with.

Search here for "Subaru", and once you sort out all the pointless debate you'll see some interesting projects. Also look at www.clubnarp.com , which has a subaru into 914 conversion section in their forums. It's not real active, but there's a lot of good information there, with good contact names. The Subaru into 914 group is still pretty small, so everyone seems very pleased to help others out with things. Lots of good talent, too.

I think Kennedy has a 2.2 na. schematic. They are where most people get their adapters and pan conversions and such if they don't use RH stuff. There are lots of people doing this with the vw style tranny and also the suby tranny. The nasioc suby site is also very useful especially on the higher performance stuff.
On club narp Tonyakavw (I think thats right wired his own and might be helpful) Your friends with the type 3's will be able to help with the wiring I'm sure.

That's another website, www.kennedyeng.com. They make engine to transmission adapters, flywheels and clutches. Many of the websites listed above sell their adapters. But if I recall correctly the wiring schematic Kennedy has is only for Subarus up to 1993 or something, and then only for engines going into Vanagons, so it's only marginally helpful.

I don't think anyone has schematics, since the wiring in Subarus changes frequently, sometimes in the same year, so it's almost impossible to keep track. The advice if you're using the stock ECU is to get the entire donor car's harness, including under dash all the way to the ECU, and then start stripping out wires that are unneeded. It takes a lot of work. That assumes you don't need the OBDII disagnostics or the Check Engine light to be functional. Alternatively if you buy an aftermarket EMS from Outfront you can send them your engine harness (don't need the rest) and they'll strip out the plugs and send you back a completed harness for $350 bucks or something. there are a couple of other companies that do the similar things, inlcuding RJ Engineering in the UK.

Check those out and if you need more we can dig something up.

No, not that. His English and the German are both fine. I was commenting on his concern that you might not approve of his "non-proper" modifications. If he's going to drive a Japanese powered Porsche around he's can't be concerned about what purists think.
