I pulled away from a stop sign and noticed this light flashing. I drove right back home, but everything seemed fine. I turned it off and restarted it and now it doesn't flash any more.

Isn't it a brake light?

It's the parking brake light. The switch was most likely stuck. If the light is off no worries.

the switch for the brake light is located such that when you release the brake handle, the handle will activate a little push switch and control the light. i've had it so that the handle came down crooked and missed hitting the switch even though the brake was off and the light was on since it missed the switch. it's possible the handle was off the switch and maybe knocked back on and turned the light off.

Is this place great or what? that took about 5 minutes.

Thanks!

isnt the 914 e-brake a grounding switch? the pin being cocked over, flutering the light makes sense. agree.gif i'd test if the light is on solid with the brake pulled and key on. you may have to clean up the contacts... i just wonder what would make it flicker
jasons
Its also a low pressure warning lamp for the brake system. Check your fluid level in your master cylinder!!!

Its happened to me- the pin gets wobbly and doesn't get pushed in all the way even though the handle is down.

Hey, ya'll is right, despite them funny werds yous a usin. I just got flashing lights in my eyes and kinda got~ y'know~ goofy....

Not the bigger than side-of-barn flashing light but small, itty-bitty round light.

Like Jason said, all joking aside, check your fluid level and master cylinder.

Okay, Here's the long story...

I've used my park break a lot in the 4 years that I've owned this car and I've never noticed that light come on once. I didn't even know it was supposed to... I thought it was a failure warning.

The brake reservoir is full, but I didn't take off the floorboard to check the master cylinder yet. In fact I haven't done much, but park it and leave in the pick-up instead. Now I'm back!

Here's the funny part. When I start the car now the light no longer flashes, but I still have a clicking under the fuse box (I'm guessing a bad relay). Anyone know where that wire from the brake system warning light goes through the fuse box and does anyone got a quick guess what would click?

When the brake light was flashing I could hear it; it almost made the same noise as a blinker unit.

I await the wisdom of the club... Non-club... whatever... you smart guys. smile.gif

Coy, these guys are all wet. If you look at page 46 in volume 3 of the service manuals it's very clear your problem and the quick fix.

That light is programed to flash when the driver has not made significant visits to his/her 914world playground either visible or in "lurk mode." So if you really don't want this serious warning light to ruin your next drive, you know what to do. laugh.gif

I think the handbrake light is supposed to flash. It is connected to signal/hazard flasher via the black/white wire (might be black/white/green in some cars)... so that sound you heard would be normal.

What does the yellow light do? I have one of these gauges in my parts car and I want to install it in my driver and put the CHT gauge in the console.

I don't know, but it and the alternator ("G") light both light up when I start the car.

Sounds like you need to push the reset pin or button on the master cylinder to stop that clicking sound, take off the cover, slide the rubber boot up and click the reset switch...let me know if that works and how much trouble it was. I will be doing this too when it stops pouring rain here, cheers

The yellow "light" is just a plastic filler lens. It does nothing. In fact, it is held in place by opaque black tape. It is a holdover from early 916/6 cars equipped with a sporto. The combo gauges in such cars had a red lens in that position for the torque converter temp warning (at least, that is what I've read... it's not like I've ever seen a 914/6 sporto combo gauge).

In the gauges with the yellow filler lens, the bulb behind that lens is shielded by a reflective metal tab to provide backlighting for the gauge.

The reset on the MC switch is very easy. The hardest part here is just jacking up the front of the car. 4 Bolts for the spash shield and some hand twisting on the MC.

BTW, do you see any RHD 914s in Japan?

After you know where the button is, you don't need to jack up the front of the car or remove the splash shield. Just crank the steering wheel to the right, reach into the wheel well, find the master cylinder, and push the reset button.

To be honest I think you went a bit far by removing the entire gauge just to stop the little light coming on! poke.gif

I don't get the joke... confused24.gif

If you crank the steering wheel all the way to the right, there will be room in the left-front wheel well to look into the area where the brake master cylinder lives. Once you know where the reset button is on the M/C, you can just reach in through the wheel well and push the button, no problem!
