AS NOTED BY PORSCHE'S INTERNAL RECORDS,THIS CAR WAS BUILT AS SPECIAL PROJECT 914/42.THE NUMBER 42 IS STAMPED NEAR THE CHASSIS NUMBER AND WRITTEN IN GREASE PENCIL ON ALL REMOVABLE PANELS,INSIDE DOOR AND UNDER DASH.THE BODY NUMBER "59" OR "597" IS ALSO STAMPED ON ALL REMOVABLE PANELS.
LIKE THE OTHER PREVIOUS FACTORY BUILT GT's, THIS CAR WAS PULLED FROM THE PRODUCTION LINE AND TRANSFORMED INTO A RACER OVER A VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. PORSCHE's RECORDS SHOW THAT THIS CAR WAS COMPLETED ON JAN. 10th,1970.THE PORSCHE RECORDS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS CAR OR KARDEX INFORMATION PROVIDE FEW DETAILS ON THE CAR ITSELF OTHER THAN SOME VERY BASIC DETAILS.THEY LIST THE CHASSIS AND ENGINE NUMBERS AS WELL AS COMPLETION DATE,COLOR AND INDICATE THAT THE CAR WAS FITTED WITH TYPICAL BLACK LEATHERETTE NORMAL INTERIOR. UNDER THE DASH OF THIS CAR THERE IS A HAND WRITTEN IN GREASE PENCIL AN UPSIDE DOWNNUMBER.IT APPEARS TO BE "720667". A RED GREASE PENCIL MARKING OF NUMBER 42 ALSO APPEARS IN THE SAME AREA.
AFTER REMOVING THE DOOR SKINS THE LEFT DOOR IS STAMPED 59 AND THE RIGHT DOOR IS STAMPED97.ADJACENT TO BOTH IS THE NUMBER 42 WRITTEN IN RED GREASE PENCIL.
THE HAND THROTTLE HAS AN ADJUSTABLE METAL TAB HELD IN PLACE BY A PHILIPS SCREW.IT IS STAMPED "3.5" THIS HAND THROTTLE OR LIMITING TAB WAS USED IN PRE-SETTING THE HAND THROTTLE IMMEDIATELY AFTER STSRT UP TO M3500 RPM TO FSACILITATE WARMING UP THE ENGINE.THIS METHOD OF STARTING WAS USED PRIMARILY IN EUROPEAN ENDURANCE RACES AFTER THE 1969 SEASON.PRIOR TO THIS, TRADITIONALLY DRIVERS WOULD LINE UP ON OPPISIDE OF THE TRACK FROM THEIR CARS AND WHEN THE GREEN FLAG FELL,THE DRIVERS WOULD RUNTO THEIR RESOECTED CARS AND START THEM AND RACE OFF. THIS DANGEROUS PRACTICE FELL OUT OF FAVOR AND THE DRIVERS WOULD THEN BE PREPOSITIONED IN THEIR CARS WITH ENGINES OFF AND COLD.WHEN THE GREEN FLAG FELL THE DRIVERS WOULD START THEIR CARS AND RACE OFF WITH SEAT BELTS ALREADY IN PLACE.THIS UNIQUE PORSCHE PART WAS AN ATTEMPT TO ASSIST DRIVERS IN THESE QUICK COLD STARTS.
THE REAR TRANSMISSION OF THIS CAR IS VERY HEAVILY REINFORCED.THE FRONT ENGINE MOUNTHAS ADDITIONAL REINFORCEMENTOF TRIANGULATED BRACKETS. THESE EXTRA REINFORCEMENTS ARE IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL BODY STIFFENING PANELS AND GUSSETS THAT FOUND IN GT BODY SECTIONS
THE REAR SUSPENSION ARMS HAVE THE RARE EXTRA BRACKETS AND LOCATING ARMS THAT ARE ADJUSTABLE .THESE ARE MOUNTED TO ADDITIONAL REINFORCED ENGINE BULKHEAD AND ARE VERY UNIQUE.
THE EXHAUST SYSTEM IS 1.5B INCHES IN DIAMETER AT THE PRIMARIES.
THE FRONT BONNET IS SINGLE SKIN FIBREGLASS WITH NO REINFORCEMENTS.IT IS EXTREMLY LIGHT
THE STEERING WHEEL IS AN ORIGINAL LEATHER WRAPPED MOMO PROTOTIPO WITH 360mm DIAMETER AND 30mm THICKNESS. IT HAS A LEATHER "PORSCHE"EMBOSSED CENTRALLY MOUNTED HORN BOTTON. THE LEFT "REPA" SEAT BELT IS DATE CODED 1969,WHILE THE RIGHT IS CODED 1970.

I have personal experience with that car. Howard was and is a personal friend. I never got to drive it, but I did get to sit in it for while. I even had a pic of it next to my 1.7. Howard used to own Rennsport werkstat in Tulsa. The car sat in his showroom for I can't remeber how long. I always enjoyed just checking it out when I was there. He told me it was rare, but I never realized just how rare.
