Yes I know they are not the best. I wish I could afford the Dakotadigital. I can get a used VDO CHT for $20.00 from a friend of mine. What i need to know is do i Have to use the VDO (brand) sender probe or can i use this one from Aircraft spruce

for the extension wire to the gauge can I use regular wire of 16 gauge as per the VDO instructions http://www.egauges.com/pdf/vdo/0-515-012-130.pdf

or do i use this extension from Aircraft spruce.

Yes, you have to use the VDO sender/wire. it should be long enough

Thanks mark i was doing some research and i cam across http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=691206 and it says

"It gets better: Dakota Digital uses VDO senders so you can re-use your senders with their gauges. I haven't bought either or these two gauges to prove it but that's what they tell me. Some of their gauges have programmable temperature ranges for maximum sender compatibility."
