Well, never started a "build" thread...so here goes.

Found the car outside LA and actually drove it home. Drove it through the canyons a few times...then the "sickness" set in.

Yes, I had to tear this car apart. Don't know why. I am an IT Project Manager by trade and a car junkie with the most limited tools ever.

List of cars come and gone:

1976 Lancia Beta HPE - high school Mulholland drive runner
1983 Fiat 2000 Spider Turbo - sweet car with a POS transmission
1967 Cadillac CDV - Lead Sled
1973 MGB GT - should have never sold it

And now, a 1970 Porsche 914

Here it is, in the seller's driveway...rippled, wavy, fogged paint.
2.0 with dual webers; ran well then.

Here it is 3 weeks later, told you I was sick!

You may remember I was the January poster child in the club 2007 calendar.

So, I thought how do I get this painted...no $$$

so, idiot me I rolled it on... Ha Ha ...DO NOT DO THIS, EVER!

so back to the sanding, blocking, etc. Work, work, work.

I bot a low pressure sprayer from ebay, and a gallon of Sherwin-Williams Western Synthetic Enamel in Coach Black for $65 with hardner; primer was an extra $20.

then, spray, spray, Only one stage...clear cote on a 914....please!

Color block sanded with 2000, then 3000, then hit it with the sears polisher; cut and polish.

Here it is 4 months later; but really dusty.

Wow! I am impressed! That paint looks great like the rest of the car. Looks like a driver to me!

Looks like a great project.

On the rear, put the wheel back on and drop the car on the ground.
Use a long breaker bar 3/4 drive and loosen the nut.
Jack it back up and remove the wheel, nut and rotor.
then remove the inner hub, bring it to a drill press to drill out the bolt...its a safer way to get it straight.

Did you sand the car down to bare metal or use stripper?

When you sprayed the paint how did you keep the over spray from getting everywhere?

I sanded down to metal in some places; other places had some good base coat but no bondo.

I block sanded in between coats of primer to get a flat finish. I hung plastic around the car in the garage, cracked the door about a foot, put a turbo fan Point out the door) on a wet floor under the car; which was on jack stands.

Used a respirator and sprayed about 4 coats of paint; one stage. Let cure then block wet sanded, machine polished...and there you go.

I remember the effort now and can't believe i got through it...but the guys here on the forum are great and I am always learning.

First car I ever prepped and painted. Prepped before but never painted. Watched a lot of YouTube videos and there is a great set of articles by CarCraft magazine.

Thanks. Gary

what are the wheels that were on the car originally? how wide?

Very nicely done. I'll take on the challenge of painting mine once I am back stateside. Until then, I just need the sucker up and running!

Dan Gurney rims...with the VW offset. Back tires were rubbing.

I think they were 5.5" wide.

Where did you get the front carpet that covers the aprons ? Kinda cool....
7TPorsh
Comes on a roll from Pep Boys. Kinda like Perlon. Stuck it to some cardboard and velcro down; easily removed.
