Tube framed reproduction of a wide bodied 356 Porsche Speedster known locally as “BAD TUB”. This NOT a cut down VW pan with a glass body on top. California registered as a 2006 CMC (Custom Motor Carriage) home-build, it has a permanent smog exemption, one of only 500 issued a year. See http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcnsreg.htm and http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcns.htm for particulars. The smog exemption is transferable to the new owners.

CMC is recognized as a provider of high end reproductions on the level of Beck http://www.beckspeedster.com/ and Intermeccanica http://www.intermeccanica.com/ .

I personally built this from an unfinished project with the help of fellow Porsche enthusiasts. It stops with disc brake front end with all new tie rods and bushings, drum rear with working emergency brakes. VW IRS four speed transmission, “Beef-a-Diff”, welded spiders, and with a freeway flyer final gear cruises at 80-85mph with no issues. Solid mounts, short shift for a crisp clean shift.

Powered by a 2180 cc dual port motor, it sports twin Independent Throttle Bodies (ITBs) with Megasquirt laptop tuned fuel injection. Controller and associated items are mounted behind the driver seat for ease of access. A Schweitzer turbocharger provides boost which is currently set at 10psi. Custom piping allows intake air to first route through a fender mounted intercooler before reaching the intakes which provides approximately 160hp. Boost can be easily adjusted to a max of 22psi but will shorten drive train life. Twin oil coolers in the front fenders keep the engine at moderate temperatures which is regulated by a MOCAL thermostat. A manually activated fan will start via a dash switch the fans mounted on the coolers.

Current powerplant has 1500 miles on it after a bottom end rebuild. New bearings were added, polished crank, as well as a camshaft and lifters along with a valve job. Fresh oil and valve adjustment has just been completed. The case has had just the one rebuild and was from a factory replacement case purchased from CB Performance. I have paperwork from the machine shop that did all the work.

Interior has all new VDO vintage “Royale” http://www.egauges.com/vdo_mult.asp?Type=S...s=Cockpit_Royal e&Units=E . The Speedometer has been adjusted to accuracy using a GPS. No more vague guesses as to how fast you are going. Red and black vinyl interior compliments the three color custom paint job. Personalized plates “BAD TUB” are available as a transfer to the winning bidder if a California resident. 12 volt system with bright H4 style front lighting.

I have the original top which rated as fair. Top fits and has been dyed black from original white. I have used it once and while has the classic looks, it cuts down on visibility. I also have the side curtains and they are in same condition. I have NEVER used these as they look to be a Real Pain to use. I don’t drive in the rain anyways as with the horsepower I would probably be sideways in every gear.

The tonneau cover on the other hand is brand new, double thick black Marine Quality canvass, custom made by a local sail maker. Great to be able close up the interior when parked when shopping or whatever. You can close up passenger side while driving as there is a central zipper. I keep the aforementioned top concealed under the cover so if in the event of a sudden rain shower it’s there and available.

Wheels are 15x7 and 8 steel chrome with 205 and 225 tires, these are four lug (4x130) widened VW wheels. They hook up well and with the front and rear anti-sway bars it handles the road well. Or at least as well as sticky tires combined with 1950s technology will allow.

This Speedster gets looks everywhere it goes. It does NOT have any badging claiming it as a REAL Porsche as it is not one. The only logos are the “EMPI” badges on the chrome nipple style hubcaps. This is a fun solid ride and will get you tons of grins. My daughters love riding down “State Street” in Santa Barbara and seeing all the people wave and stop to take picture. It has participated in the Wheels and Waves car show here in Santa Barbara for the last two years. It is always a crowd pleaser.

I’m simply moving on to other projects and this has served its purpose…FUN!

I’ve posted a few pics if you want particulars please send me a request. I will assist in shipping and storage.
