Took another step closer to completing my GT clone yesterday when I picked up the engine and transmission from my mechanic. It's a 78 3.0 big port with 40mm Webers. My mechanic checked all the vitals of the engine including compression and leakdown and all is good
He also ordered all new carb parts to size it for the 3.0. Had him go thru the tranny with a clean bill of health. The stage II pressure plate, clutch disc and throwout bearing are from Kennedy Engineering. Today I installed the " fiberglass " engine tin and did some clean up. The exhaust will be ceramic coated headers with M&K 2 in 2 out muffler. Engine internals are all stock but I still expect she'll perform just fine
I still have to give the outside of the transmission a bath. I have billet aluminum K&N air filter housings to install. Ignition distributor completely rebuilt and recurved for the carbs. Ignition will be powered by a digital Mallory CD box. I'm real happy with how things are shaping up

Chassis is coming along. If all goes as planned she'll be painted by the end of the month. It's a little cool here in Orlando for painting so we'll see. Not as cold as up north

Beautiful - I so wanna yank off my motronic spagetti wiring mess and put on pmo's. By the way, the left lower rocker cover doesn't look like the ribs have beem machined down yet. Gonna be tough/impossible to remove with the engine installed.

Good eye there ! I'm new to 914's and didn't find out about this mod until all was painted. I could go back and redo but for now I'll deal with it when it comes up. I don't normally do my own valve adjustments I usually have my mechanic do them. I'm guessing a partial engine drop ( 2 inches ) would do the trick? Or maybe we'll grind the valve cover at that 1st adjustment, at least then it won't be so pretty

Engine looks gorgeous...
May I offer one suggestion to make that engine look really trick when opening the engine lid...911R rainshields...
Pelican has repros for $240/pair. I know, from personal experience, that more and more money gets spent on little details...but they really make the motor look cool...IMO

My suggestion of the covers would be to do it when you install the motor. Do the engine install with the covers off......then grind em' till they go on. A considerable amount of material needs to come off the fins.
A 2 inch drop will not do the trick and you want to addjust the valves within a few hunderd niles of the install.
I'd also spend a little money/time on something like this. It allows you to install/remove the motor by yourself if necessary. The set up is *stable*.
Making it work takes a bit of backyard engineering as the is not enuff lift from the unit to make the move in one lift.
BTW, YEAF but REAFer.

Anyone have a detail pic of where the cover has to be ground down? Is it both sides that have to be done?

Not a great picture but......
Generally, trim the fins down to the level of the hole bosses in the area marked.
Even then, leave them off till the motor is installed.
Yes, both sides.
I ain't too good at the photoshop work

You may not have to go as deep as I did. I forget that my pivot arms threaded ends are longer than the stockers....prolly about 1/8 inch.
I forget a lot lately. The CRS syndrome.
