OK, I haven't done one DE or AutoX and I know me,
I will hooked after the first time (heck I'm already hooed
)
You thoughts, the 74 LE parts car came with red/orange painted mahle rims. My car is signal orange and I want to use these rims for autoX tires
I don't want to mess up my Fuchs so......
I know who cares what color the rims are if you are
racing, well I guess I do. Was thinking of painting
them black, what do ya think? here is a pic of the rims and my ride.

get 'em blasted and then get some good rattlecan and some clear and you can get some good results.
Eastwood also has some "wheel" paint, but I haven't tried it.

so what is the best way to prep them for paint?
Remove loose paint, mask it off and paint? Since they
will be used for autoXing I would guess rattle can
paint would be ok?

Getting them blasted would be best, or you could just rough up the orange paint. What's the original Mahle paint again? Wurth satin silver? Anyway they look great silver. Then a clear coat.

That is the orginal paint! off an LE Creamsicle car that is. I guess they are ok for AX, pretty narrow at 5.5 and heavier than the Fuchs. Get some widened 6" steel wheels for AXing, Brad has some laying around I hear.

would the six inch rims fit under my stock fenders? The lips have been rolled a bit by a PO. Isn't the Mahles rims the same size (5.5) as the Fuchs?
I'm a newbie to AXing, so don't want to crazy, I just
don't to mess my Fuchs and figured the Mahles are
good enough to use.

205x50x15's Kuhmos will fit just fine on 6"rims. On 5.5 rims they pucker in alittle but that extra half inch helps to get them flatter.
Run 'em the way they are with the orange paint, they look cool and are your "fast wheels"!

Wasn't there a discussion that you can't do this
to alloy wheels?

Paint EM black. POR 15 MAYBE
Wider wheels will bump you a class in autocross, so unless you already have to run CSP/Mod for other stuff, run 5.5's

Paint them completely flat black. All the P factory racecars (907,08, 10, 17) had all black wheels.

Bead Blast them and polish the raised spokes.
Not the best picture but you can get the point.

They're painted with a 2 component ppg and the color is gun metal silver. I added a little hardener so they would resist roadwear and then clearcoated them. I am all for painting.

If those are original paint 914 LE rims, you might want to hold onto them. They have some value as a preservation piece, I'm sure.
Otherwise, if you're determined to repaint them...
http://www.highway914.net/tech/wheel_painting.htmI haven't had any problems with the wheels, but next time I'd do the job, I'd use some type of etching primer.
Hope this helps,
Rusty
