Out side of asking why would you want to, has any one ever opened up a coil? Just curious on what the guts of it look like.

Yes, a long time ago. Inside you will find oil, oily paper separating the coils of wire, and little oily wires.

It's name tells you what it looks like....a coil, primary and secondary windings, in other words an electrical transformer.
Yes it's in oil and old ones may have PCB's
