Suppose you had a 70 era 911 with no engine and a 914 engine sitting around. What would it take to install the 914 engine in there and make it work? I like the idea of the 76 912, but I am unsure of whether you can find everything you need to make the 911 + type IV combo work, when the car is not really a 912. I really love 911s, but I don't like the 6K+ engine rebuild costs.

I've seen it done before. No reason why you can't do it too. Doesn't Jake have some 911 with 4s on his website?

Put a 914 2.0 in a 77 Targa when the 2.7 wore out. Sounded like a good idea till I drove it for the first time...

The 912E had a the right gearing for a T4. You also have to admit it was a slow poke before the 2056......

Mike, you are correct, sir! I also have 50 series tires . this allowes you to drive in 4th gear until you hit the interstate. I'm about 3200 RPM in 5th at 70 MPH .

sell it to me!....:-) All I have heard is people taking 912 to 911 not the other way around. Besides AhEm....the 911 engine will not require as frequent a rebuild as a t4...IMHO

All you have to do is pick up the phone and call parts heaven. They will have the mount.
However, I would say just take your time and find a good used 6 for it. You should be able to find a good 3.0 for around 3500ish or I just bought a good 2.7 for 1700 delivered to my door complete with CIS, fuel accumulator and relay board.
I figure to make it run right you would need to get a 912 gear box, which may mean axle / hub issues. Then you have heater issues b/c good luck finding 912e heater boxes. You will have to find a 912 tach or have yours redone. Lastly, you will suffer from HDD...
I think that converting to a type IV would be as expensive as finding a good used 6 IMHO ... Shoot if you want a 4 just sell it and buy a 912 if thats what your after.

So are you guys saying that the gear box is not suited for it? I think I would put at least a 2056 in it.

I think the early 912's were something like 6:37 . The 911's were 7:31. I did the 912-> 911 conversion. the 912 gears kicked ARSE with the 6.
