Am looking for a clean 2.0L 914 but having a difficult time finding one in the Northeast for under $6,000. Would a 1.7L or 1.8L be competitive in Autocross if a 2.0L is not available?

the most important thing is the body. Don't worry about the engine. 2.0 engines are readily available. A 2.0 is much spunkier feeling than a 1.8 but the 1.8 fuel injection is smoother less complicated and gets better gas mileage.

If you're talking SCCA stock or SP classes, the answer is "none of the above". The 914 is quite simply outclassed in both of those classes.

For PCA, it depends on which region or zone you'll be running with.

If you're running with another outfit, you'll have to check through their rules.

The 2.0 offers more torque across the board and more power than the 1.7 or the 1.8 does. Unless there are upgrades allowed the smaller-engine'd cars that are not allowed the 2.0s (lighter weight, better suspension, etc.) then the 2.0 will be more competitive than the 1.7 or 1.8 914.

I was hoping to compete in SCCA SP C class against Miatas and the Solstice and thought the 914 could keep up with them, but I guess 40 years of technology is a lot to make up for.
