Anyone have the SKF or FAG number off a rear hub bearing?

Hardly a "substitute". It's the SAME bearing, and it's also found under BMW and Saab numbers.

I bought some from this place last year at the best price I could find by far. Looks like they are out of stock now but if you are not in a hurry they may be able to help.

If you need them right away I think Eric Shea at PMB performance stocks them and he does more for the 914 community than most.

PartsQuick has been out for a long time now.

You can also get a shipment of these bearings from china for about $11 a piece. Min. order is about $4000 though. Thats alot of bearings.

Who knows what you will get though. They cant even make drywall right.

Nice job on the bearing list. I have most of that info printed from the web but not compiled as nice as you have done. I agree with you, not knowing what you will get for 19.50, but if the buyer does his research he can probably get a quality bearing for $25-$30.

It is interesting the price range you will find just on a FAG Canadian bearing at various retailers. Last year when I was looking I found from $24-$85 for the same bearing. That is how I found PartsQuick. They had free shipping on all orders over $75. and I picked up a couple of extras for the other car.

It would be interesting to do a long term durability test on the chinese bearings compared to a few others. Some have even said the SKF outlasts the FAG bearing. I think the chinese bearings I saw required a minimum order of 500 pcs.

You missed my point. It's the SAME bearing. I always order the least expensive one available at the time, as long as it is produced in Europe. The Chinese ones don't float my boat .................. The Cap'n

SKF does make good bearings for sure, so does NSK.

I'm with the Captn, I will pay a little more for a name brand bearing. I'm sure the Cheap import ones run true, and probably reasonable material. Who knows what grease they stuff in it. Could be horse crap for all I know. This is not the easiest job to do, I don't want to do it twice.

I just bought a pair a couple months ago. You're referring to the bearing in the trailing arms? ~3" OD, 1 5/8" ID and shy of 1 1/2 in width?

I would assume any of the top tier bearings are the same. They will be better than the originals even when they were new. Grinding technologies have come a long long way since the 70's. Most bearings are class 3 or better now. I tried to buy a class 5 for a motorcycle and it was special order and twice the price !

It's a duplex, angular contact bearing. Only way to determine end play is to load the inner races (they're separate) against each other; they're ground for a specific preload.
