I am looking for a single or double cab i would prefer a rustless version but may take something with a bit of surface, it does not need to look pristine, flat old paint will do, run it must
i will be looking on the samba as well
but if you guys see one
that does not cost the moon
pm me the info, or link
i know this should be posted in the wanted section...but i thought it would get better airplay here
thanks a ton

OK, so I know you're looking for a split, but I bumped into this bay on CL and figured I'd pass it on. I'll keep my eyes open.

I see one every day, the old farmer won't even talk to me about it. He yelled IT'S NOT FOR SALE!!! at me and 3 other guys that I know. It's rotting in a field. I hate seeing cool cars rot. He also has a '65 Mustang, a regular early transporter and an MGA rotting over there and another under a rotted cover that looks like an early Mercury Cougar. Rotting!

DOKA BAYI may do a double cab, but i would prefer a single for the space issue in the back
as the doubles have less length in the box, but a split is a must
i hate rust.
and would like to see something in the 5 to 7 range with a few aftermarket features
a good runner with faded paint is fine

"5 to 7 range"? This is a joke, right? Nice ones are going for 15-25, very nice ones for 35 and up. That's down from about 80 a couple of years ago. The Cap'n

Those of us that have split single cabs in running condition as you describe aren't willing to part with them! I'm sure you will find one, but for the price range you are looking, you'll need to do a lot of work to it.

I will bet for 5k the project will not run and will need several large new body panels.

you and the family will enjoy a crew much more. why the worry about the long bed? it's not like you'll be carrying sheets of plywood. that 68' @9k looks like a deal to me. roof rack, conastoga cover. fairly cool.

He's looking for a marketing tool. 68's not a split - no cache.

I am looking for a Bay window double cab myself... My wife wants it for a daily driver (after I add a 3.8X51 engine and a 6 Speed)

That's why they call them fatchick buses...the splitties go for twice as much money. I have a 60 singlecab with a type4 in it. Prices have gone down a bit in the last year or so. Expect to pay around 8-12k for a nice running single and 14-20k for a nice running double.

That's the price range of a "project" for anything decent like you describe wanting (ie - rust-free) I would expect to pay $10K-$15K+ minimum.

Yup, I've been looking at bus projects for a year and double cabs are $$$. But I will say that if you keep your eyes open, there are good deals out there. There is a pretty nice looking single cab near me for $3500. IIRC, it's got a motor.

I have to agree that pre-68 type II's in general, For what he wants to pay is a definite "fixer-upper". For 5 to 7K you will more than likely have to re-place a few panels, have to build a motor and find some if not several expensive parts. 10K is probably a better starting point. Atleast thats what I (the wife) plan on spending for a decent "Project" if I can find one and I finish the 914. Good luck and happy hunting!!!

I love my 76 Bay Double Cab. It will be getting a Camper Special Kit at the end of the year. I bought mine in Germany. I was looking for a Splitty but the prices her in Germany are insane for the earlier VW's. The Bays make great daily drivers. The Splits look better.

I am gonna rip[ the Type 1 out ASAP (I'll do my best to scatter it first) and then I'll run one of my Camper Special Engines for a year or two while I am prepping the 4 liter and six speed for it...

I used to have a '67 split. Drove it for about a year. The floor had some rust problems so I sold it to a young kid. I should have kept it.

come on Steve, ya can't take the kids camping in a splitty double cab..
Get a Westy so it can be used for something other than parking out front of the store.
I'll drive up soon so you can drive and drool over my Westy with the CS engine.

I had one of those in 1970, well it was a 67 sunroof with the 21 little windows. Sold it to a friend and his mom rear ended a Cadillac as she drove like a manic. That bus was cold as air came in everywhere in the winter...

Of those posted the one in AK seems to be the best deal for the money. My friend has a westy he redid about 15 years ago and it's just setting on his ranch gradually going downhill. The last time the top was raised something came loose in the front hinge area.
