Full Version: OT: Where to get poly-V belts

Watts and I need this for our bastard subaru children.

Its a Metric poly-V belt - 27 inches/686mm long, with 5 ribs - "PK" spec. I've searched all over the net and can only find manufacturing supplier that want me to call and order 10,000,000zillion of them.

Any ideas?

This was like the first hit on Google. Also you can go down to the local Pep Boyz and look over their assortment.

Uh - that's the right length to go around the crank, power steering and alternator. The one I specified is only long enough to go around the crank and alternator......

you might have to run a shorter or longer belt and get creative on how it is run around the pulleys.........the tensioner can be moved or if need be, a secondary one added.............

The tensioning for this belt is handled by moving the alternator up and down. I could put the power steering pump back on and just loop it off, which would mean the stock belt would fit. I toyed with the idea of using the 3/4 rib air conditioning belt with it's tensioner, but I couldn't find anywhere to mount it that would work well.... I'll have another look now that I have all the mounting brackets in place though.

You were talking the other day about running the PS pump so I thought you just wanted the regular Surbaru belt.

They make these things in a rainbow of different sizes, I'm not convinced finding the right one will be a problem. I suppose I could stop by my FLAPS and look.

I went to Kragen's yesterday. Honestly, I dare not ask them about a belt of a specific size - the people in my local store are such a pathetic waste of space - if you don't have a year, make and model you are completely SOL. I tried to get the Fan switch yesterday for the radiator - and some plug wires. I guess I'm going to have to get two sets of escort wires so that I have 4 long ones - they just shrug their shoulders if you ask about being able to get anything but a pre-boxed set. The fan switch is something they have to special order. Nothing particularly unexpected I guess, but I will net-net save myself a lot of time by ordering my stuff online.

My reason for asking this question was if someone knew of company that has a decent online store where you can specify a belt and see products like it. MSC Direct does havet this feature, but they don't seem to sell metric belts. grrr.

I realised that running the PS pump is a bit of a hack, and I was persuaded by the thread to find the smaller belt and run that with just the alternator.

just ask to look at the belt selection yourself, they've done that in the past for me when looking for a belt or hose for a non-stock application

As far as I can tell, 29" is as close as you are going to get off the shelf.

26" to 28" is the adjustment range of the alternator.

The local FLAPS has a big theft problem - they used to be a bit better about letting you behind the counter to look at stuff, but these days you can't even look at the tools.

I should go to the gotelli speed shop in south san fran instead - those guys are more accomodating.

Dude, you need to do some social engineering. When I go in and ask about something obscure and they ask what make/model/year I just tell them straight up - I'm fabbing parts for a race car. They say "Come on back an lets see what we can find". You'll answer questions about your project, which they will think is cool, you'll make a friend, and get the part you need.

Secondary issue. Rather than run the power steering pump, why not just pull it off and put an idler in it's place. Then you can run the stock belts. This seems to be the logical thing to do.

Try Brey-Krause on Industrial, Redwood City. I got a belt there for my old Buick, when the AC pump seized. I calculated the length required to bypass it and the guy spent the time to research and get the correct matching length - very helpful. I'm sure they would work with you on this and they have the catalogs listing by length.

I was thinking of stripping the pump down and trying to make an idler out of it. I might give that a go. Do you have suggestions on where to look for idlers - I'd need a bearing housing etc. I ought to buy a mill already so I can make some of this stuff.

Two possibilities that I know of for serpentine idler assemblies - air pump delete on S-10 trucks/blazers and AC delete on Ford 5.0s (just to get you started).

agree.gif ditto on the S-10/Blazer. hit the junkyard, look for early 80's (up to '84).

Here is the # of the belt you need Gates K 050-275. Why go to Flaps when you can ask me. I have been doing this for a long time. If you would have sent me an email the question you would of had the answer right away. Steve
