Okay so I came accross a mid 70's 911 tranny that is supposedly a 4 speed. The numbers on the tranny are 915-301-101-1r . Is this a 930 tranny? I'm not sure where to look to find out. Anything that would help me identify it would be great.

That may be a casting #. What's stamped on the rib on the bottom?

From the trans casting number we know it is not a 901 but a 915 trans. 930 trans came available in 1976. If I remember correctly, they were the only model using the 4 speed. The number on the rib will tell all.

I just talked to the guy. This 4sp tranny came out of a 76 911s. It was imported from Japan? Having him turn the flanges on the tranny when he spins one side. The other side spins the other way. That means it's stock right? Limited slip wouldn't turn the other flange?

LSD would not turn the other way, correct.

There are some good pages out there to do your research.
The 930 is usually used by folks with big torque & hp that can get by with 930's four speeds. Actually the GT-40 kit folks use a lot of these transmissions in their V-8 cars. A friend is installing one in his home-built tube-framed McLaren fabrication.

I have two early ones, one of which may wind up in my 914-6 conversion. The advantage is that the LSD in my 914 transmission will work in the early 915's as well. The disadvantage is that I have to replace the side plate with a reinforced one and the bearing retainer with the one-piece version... and I'm stuck at 7:31. But life is hard.

I am just intrigued if it's a 4 speed 930 tranny. Guy wants $500 for it & I really don't have the extra coin. I'd break out the card if it's a 930 though. So the only 4 speed tranny they made was a 930 tranny correct? Does it have a 930 number or a 915 number on it? Only has 98,000 miles on it. Guy was rebuilding the motor & decided to get a 5speed for it. It's just got to be a 930 that was put in this 76 911s he bought. All I know is it came over from Japan 20+ years ago & he bought it. He's had it ever since. Be nice for down the road

You're NOT correct. There were plenty of 4 speed 915s out there. If you're unwilling to get the number off the lower rib, you might as well forget getting any help, as we can't answer your question. Part of the help process is for the person asking the question to give as much pertinent information as possible when originally posting, and following up as necessary with any other requests for more information in order to ensure the best possible answer.
