It seems to me that inspection, maintenance and accessability are better with the intake facing left (to the driver's side).

I'm not sure whether it should face right or left, but, I'm pretty sure that the area under the rubber bumpstop for the engine lid should be painted black to match the area under the grills. 
Studies have shown that the coolest air is behind the driver.
That is why the thing faces the drivers side.
