finally got the motor up onto the stand.

I can turn the motor be the fan but then I noticed that the whole damn crank moves in and out like 5mm.

Uh yeah. the end play is supposed to be measured and the correct amount of shims added, I think 5mm is a bit large IIRC it should be >3mm

You must not have a flywheel on it. The Flywheel holds the crank back. IIRC, the spec was something like .003-.005" . very small

yes, the flywheel is removed.

I am splitting the case anyway, just wondering if the movement indicates anything foreboding.

without the flywheel, thats pretty much normal...
