Full Version: Original 6 - Rebuild or upgrade

May need to rebuild the original 2.0 6 in my 914-6. Trying to decide whether I should do the rebuild or replace the motor with a 3.0 or 3.2.

I love the sound of the original 6 but would appreciate a little more low end torque. I'm not sure that rebuilding the original 6 would be any cheaper that the 3.0/2.3 swap. There is a 3.0 with fresh rebuild on ebay right now that will go for less than $9,000. Those with experience may want to chime in.

Another question is whether to go with fuel injection or back to Weber's or PMO's. I know of all of the advantages of injection (more reliable, less power loss in the mountains, probably better milage) but the sound of carbs is hard to beat.

Do the 3.0/2.3 engines require an external oil cooler, don't remember at the moment.

Does anyone remember a link here on the site dealing with a 3.0/3.2 transplant.

Keep the original motor for resale with car. Then stuff whatever you want in it. If you go carbs go with the PMO.

I'm going to run a 3.0 with the small engine mounted cooler, but I don't intend on driving the car that hard. If the 2.0 is original to the body, I say put it away and run the 3.0 Save the 2.0 and get it rebuilt when you have extra $ or save it for the future owner to put back in.

It's hard to answer this in a sentence or 2. I my case (original 6) I opted for 3.2, not so much for power, but b/c the motronic is the first really good fuel system. I was fed up with webers. That said, I did what porsche did as far as external cooler and wevo box. But be forewarned - slippery slope situation. Both timewise and $-wise. Good luck!

I've got a 3.0 in my '74 conversion. I once had it in an orignal six, but sold the body (getting weak). If you got a 3.0/3.2 I would add an oil cooler either up front or under rear trunk with a thermostat. Others who have them in the rear can tell you how they work. Mine is up front. Out today for a drive in mid 90's weather and oil never got above 190-200.
I'm using a kit from PMS for the 3.0 clutch. Went with the "puck" disc. Gives me no problem street driving. The kit lets you use the stock 901 box with the 3.0 flywheel/ring gear.
I've got Webers. What I had already. A friend has a 3.6 with FI and it's sure nice to start it up and GO.
You might consider upgrading brakes too with the larger engine?
That's the only issues I can think of, oil cooling and engine to tranny. If I've missed anything others will chime in.

Are you referring to the standard cooler? I have seen one with the cooler mounted to the grate above the engine as well as ones with the cooler under the rear trunk. Both with thermostatically controlled fans.

The current 6 is a 914-6 engine (not 911) but is not original to this car.

I remember reading somewhere what the advantages of a big bore/short stroke engine was but do not remember right now. Any insight on this?

We have a very rare 1979 porsche 911sc engine , built to big bore/ short stroke 3.2 liter, complete rebuild to original specs. Has Std crank that has been magged & polished, new bearings, rebuilt oil pump, new chains, ramps and 930 turbo tensioners , new JE pistons (10.5 to 1 comp) & mahle 97mm nikesil cylinders .. Cams are 964/3.6 grind specs, this engithe pistons do have deep valve pockets, so you can run larger cams. The heads have been rebuilt, ported and polished , 3 angle valve grind, new valve guides, new springs.

Ken, I've got 40 webers.....I have the standard oil cooler mounted to the engine and an Earl's cooler in front with a thermostat......

On the 3.0 conversion unless you want to cut up the car for the CIS to fit, Go to Webers or PMO's. I have PMO 40mm on mine. Richard makes a intake manifold for the 3.0 Cis motor. Have the distributor recurved by Jerry Woods or Barry at I.A.E. You will not need a front mounted cooler if you are only street driving. Mine has a front mounted cooler and like jt914-6 stays very cool. I too used the PM flywheel kit and it works. Stock trans with stock gearing is what I have found works for me.
