hello all,

i'm restoring a 73 teener here in tampa, fl

due to rust issues, i've had to repair the entire area where both cables enter the firewall; as an end result, i've lost both conduits where the cables fastened to the f/w

i've bought new left and right cables and the short one too, whew expensive

here is a shot of the outer firewall area repaired

here is a shot of the outer firewall area from inside

and finally a shot of the replacement inner firewall from autoatlanta that i haven't welded in yet due to this problem

does anybody have any ideas how to reattach these cables? really need some help here from the experienced team

thx

Hopefully you still have the tubes from when you cut all the rust out...just so you can get the correct outer and inner dimensions.

What you will have to do is bend up tubing to match the original, its important to have them come in at the right angle or the cable (especially the passenger side) wont fit right.

From there, its not to hard...cut and bend the tubes.
Drill the holes at the right angle (find a local car to get the right angle)
When you get the tubes, find copper pipe that fits inside perfectly..you will use this as a backer so that when you tack the tube in place, you wont blow through and end up with welds on the inside...that will end up scraping on the cable...not good.

Good luck.
If you need a piece, it may be helpful to get someone to cut that section out for you so you have it in hand to take measurements.

how does the threaded barrell end connect to these tubes? does it screw into the tube end? it looks like the connector on the end is too big to fit thru a tube where the threaded barrel can screw into; surely its not welded to the tube?

Nope, the threaded ends of the cables just slide inside the firewall tubes until they reach the adjusting nuts.

There are two nuts on the threaded cable ends, and that's how you adjust the cable.

I had a car here that had the brake cable tubes repaired with a PLUMBING SUPPLY LINE! Yes a chrome water supply tube, which was bent and didn't allow the cable to come out!

Get a cut piece off a salvage car otherwise you'll probably have trouble with those cables.
