I'm getting ready to put my fuel tank back in and when I picked it up and turned it over a ton of rust poured out of it. What the heck? Can I take it to someone who deals with this type of stuff? Wash it out? Throw it away?
Help.
See if a local radiator shop will boil out your "VW" fuel tank.
If they boil out your "Porsch-uh" fuel tank, the price will be 50% more, I'm sure.
I had the same pile of rust drop out of my last tank. Glad it wasn't just mine. A good heads up for others when pulling and cleaning fuel tanks. I pressure washed mine and put it right back due to female pressure. I tried to find tank sealer and can't remember who sells it.

i did this once with a 911 tank. i believe i got the stuff from Eastwood. It was white, like milk. Swished it around in the tank and it quickly dried to be almost like ceramic. Did the trick for a leak I had.
Okay, took the tank down to an industrial radiator shop here in town. He says the tank actually looks pretty good for being 30 years old. He's going to boil and then acid bath it. He also recommends against trying to seal the tank unless you have it done professionally as he has had both first hand and customer experience with problems later on due to the difficulty in prepping.
what was the cost?? i need two done and i was looking for a ball park price.

What was on the inside of a new factory tank? Bare metal? paint? special coating?
Get a hand full of 1/2 nuts and put them in the tank.
Shake it up really good.
Turn upside down get all if the nuts a rusty stuf out.
Use OSPHO .
Plug the fuel line outlets.
Pour about a pint of OSPHO in slosh it around well, Dump out.
Let dry for a day or two.
Get a large magnet I use Car Stero Speaker magnets.
Stick on the outside bottom of the tank before you reinstall.

Mine was $80 for a clean out. No lining put in there. They were bare metal from the factory.
Contact Joe Buckle, he just had this done last week at Matsons Radiator shop. They blast the inside with a chemical stripper and them seal it and then powder coat it. They did a really nice job but i dont know how much they charged him.
Yup....60-100 bucks depending on the high rent district....ditto on VW versus Porsche price....
