Yep - it's pretty neat. It runs like a top. My mother is really the only one that drives it (fits in it!). It looks fantastic with a Christmas tree in the back. I would love to stecil "UN" on the canvass, or paint a palm tree on the door. It was restored long ago, definitely a 10-20 footer now - but for some reason it's current condition seems to "fit" - if that makes sense.
here is the only other picture I have...
Just to clarify, while yes, all of those cars, plus one or two more are in the shop, we (my bother my Pop and I) do this little hobby together. 90%of all the cars are titled under an LLC. The healey, the TF and the Jag that is in process, were all done purely as investments. The GT 350 is now in a collection in China.

Yes, that is my car on the Colonial Parkway between Williamsburg and Yorktown. I did buy it from a guy in VA beach about two years ago. My wife calls it my 40th Birthday Present
Yes it's a real numbers matching 67' S, has original 4.5" Fuchs and all. Just not painted the original color. Someday it will be restored to its original Polo Red. It was actually running, but not very well with all of the rust in the gas tank, and thankfully it was sitting in a garage on concrete. One of many projects to tackle when I retire in a few years.

El Riviera! I love it! Thats a great idea. That would look really cool. I've always thought the front end of a 65 is one of the best of the era and grafted on to a camino would make a sweet truck. Good luck with that. Send or post some pictures when it gets underway, I'd love to see it. Paul S.

My Riv is too far gone to ever restore. Plus No Title. I got it free with 2 other 68 Riv's I bought to restore one. So After I finally take the front end and certain interior pieces out, you or anybody else can have the rest for free.

I didn't wake up one morning thinking I should buy 2 or 3 vintage cars that day. I kind of grew into it over a number of years. Once you start hanging out in the classic car community, you get exposed to so many cool cars out there in all sorts of different flavours. So how can you have just one? I tell my wife at least I don't have it as bad as Jay Leno.
What I don't really get is the bunch of guys out there who seem to find themselves with 3, 4, 5 or more of basically the exact same model/year/spec of car. If they're not different to look at or to drive, then why have more than one? Seems especially prevalent with Nash Metropolitan owners for some reason... But whatever, to each his own.

Nice find. What's the deal with those external " semaphores " ? Are they just an aftermarket add on light or are they some sort of O.E. euro device ?

Hey Mark
Is that a 1935 Chevy Master Deluxe? (on page 5 posted by marks914)
My dad had one just like it when I was a kid. He bought it for $400, and it was a complete car. I used to drive it around the block, (probably clocked a few hundred miles on the circle where we lived) but never officially got her on the road. I spent many afternoons with my old man tinkering around with it, but it was one of those projects that never quite got finished.
He sold it to a guy that let it rot next to his house for too many years. F-ing tool never moved it after he got it back to his house. It used to kill me to drive by & see it sitting outside deteriorating over the years. God I wish I had bought it back from the a-hole!
I will see if I can find some pictures of it.
Nice to see that there is still one out there getting shown some love. Awesome car!!!!

"Why can't I post pics?"
I followed the instructions found in the FAQ section under >The 914 Forums> First for resizing your pictures, then for posting them. Good luck! I want to see your Bimmer.
I had my 1600 in northern Illinois, from 1974 (bought for $1250 with ~80,000 miles) till sold about January 1980 with about 120,000 miles. Very fun car. Also had rust issues. Rear shock towers!

It has to be under 200 kb, or you could open a free photobucket account and host them there. Then copy the 'direct link' at photobucket, here you would click the icon above, on this window, that looks like a oak tree. A new small window will open, rght click to paste. That's it.

It's 500kb for the total size of the each individual post including all of the pictures included within it.
You can also post without quoting someone else's post.

The really low tech way to resize photos using ms windows is to right click on the photo and select "send to" then select "Mail recipient". It will ask if you want to make your photos smaller. Mail the photo to yourself. Then open your email and save the attachment you get and your photo will by 75K or so. I do this all the time when I am too lazy to use a photo editing program. You can select multiple photos and mail them all to yourself in one email.
Now, lets see some more dang pictures!!!

Here are pictures of my 1971 Super Beetle. This car was my daily driver until I brought home the 914. The 71' is the car that caused me to become fascinated with aircooled engines. It is tons of fun, and I have no plans to sell it. Unfortunately, the nice shiny paint concealed a bit of cancer underneath, but its nothing a bit of can't fix. I still drive it often, but its difficult not to drive the 914 all the time. BTW, I have cleaned up the engine compartment a bit since the pictures were taken.

You better check the Vin#, as I've never seen somebody put those super heavy 75-76 bumpers on an earlier car.

The wife's 63 Dodge Dart GT convert.
Three on the tree, 225 slant six, and a mighty one barrel carb! I'll see if I can find some pics of my Galaxie to post as well (63.5 fastback, 390). You know, when I bought the Dodge, I figured: "How hard can a Dodge Dart be to restore?" Answer: much harder than I imagined!

I dunno if it qualifies as cool, but my daily-driver is fast and reasonably comfortable. I've been really happy with it, but it's now over 10 years old and may get replaced this year if I decide what to get.

I know it has 75 bumpers. It also has a 75 gas tank, 75 steering column, 75 wiring, 75 2.0 motor. 73 body Vin# starts 47329*****.

Seems really odd to have all of those 75 things as it would cost some to convert to the less desired parts. Sounds interesting.

Nope - it is my daily driver and actually owned and insured by my business so it would not be too brilliant for me to trash it at the track. I have thought about doing it just once though... It is a heavy pig but is a torque monster. I've heard the brakes do not stand up well in heavy track use (?). It has a GIAC chip and a bigger rear swaybar but bone stock otherwise.
Your car looks fun. I definitely buy into the AWD Turbo advantage for certain situations. Like the rainstorms this week.
Posted by: Andyrew Jan 21 2010, 10:09 AM
Ya the brakes dont do to well on the track.. Glazed mine pretty bad doing a couple hot laps with someb7 RS4's at buttonwillow. Just another one of those things to add to the mod list.. Currently its the only thing I havent touched (Drilled and slotted rotors are on.. but we know that makes little difference) as I spend most of my track time on autox's. Some good tires, a balanced setup, the car is pretty quick at an autox.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zl3N4G88DM8

Posted by: Pursang Jun 28 2019, 11:47 PM
I've had the 914 for 32 years now. 1974 2.0
The Harley is a custom. It is one of 10 that were built by Bartel's Harley in Marina Del Rey in 1992-93. Not all ten are the same. Some differences in paint and other minor things. Frame is a Trackmaster. Custom glass. Aluminum tank. 883 Sportster with a 1200 kit on it. Sun rims; 18" front and rear. 81 HP and 430 pounds.
Back in the 1970's I used to race flat track but quit riding by the end of that decade. Bought a Triumph in 2005 and sold it in 2007 to get this. Love the way it looks. And handles. And sounds.
Thinking about selling it now though. At my age (73) reaction times are a little slower than in my racing days. Love the bike though. And the teener of course.

There isnt much available sadly. The super eight is a one off build made by a Swedish car designer. He lives about an hour from me and I went to see him earlier this year and the car, or what remains of it. He started to rebuild it but never finished so its a dusty cut up mess at the moment. Its based on a Dax Super seven chassis with a TVR V8 and a custom made bodyshell and built back in 2006 or 2007.

If you have the Competition header make sure to ceramic coat it, as these are old & great designs. We built ('80-90s) the Clifford Perf (6=8) units which were BRE copies and fetch high $$. Looks like Rebello is offering similar tri-y headers that we mfg . might be sourcing from our SoCal distributor

Nice! I've spent a considerable amount of time working on a fairly wild one.
What engine/trans package?
@Flcor75 just read the blog, I can not find any information on the Super 8 - interested in more information.
I built a very wild one! It took me 3 years to build and has been completed for 3 years.
My Lotus 7ish car was built from scratch by me right here in SoCal..
Weighs 1350 pounds Has a 375-400 HP turbo RX7 engine (Rotary built from different generations of RX7 and RX8 stuff. Haltech Fuel Management BNR Stage 3 turbo Heavily modified Mazda transmission First gen RX7 rear axle with Moser axles
We keep it at our house in Lake Arrowhead. It is in heaven up there in the twisties.

My latest project is restoring this Pickle. I just painted it this spring and have started putting it back together. (1972 Westy)
There is also this shitbox BMW 2002 that keeps getting pushed farther and farther down in the restoration queue. I was supposed to start working on it again last summer but the Bus took priority.
There is this camping trailer I built of a '66 Army trailer (currently for sale)
The lifted 4Runner, which is still in progress but the progress is glacial. I need to get the winch on it. It has bash pans, sliders, 3 inch lift, 33s.
And on the opposite end of the 4Runner is the lowered Challenger RT Plus. I Keep thinking about selling it but I REALLY like driving it. If I sold it I'd just drive the 4Runner daily.
That's what I have at the moment. Some stuff in progress, some stuff driving, some stuff for sale to fund the projects.

Later fitted with rear flares, real mag wheels and a roll bar. Kinda wish I still had her!

I get it. They may not be the height of tech and flash but the 996 is a solid bargain. Spiced up my 996.1 with a Chevy 6.2L LS3, it's my favorite daily driver 'car'.

My 2003 Mexi-Bug.
Friend of mine (RIP) helped me buy it in 2004. He also had one and knew how to get them legally into the US. It's spent most of it's life in storage or just sitting around. The past two years I've swapped out for a Berg 5spd trans and upped the 1.6 to a 1.7. It uses the 2000 era VW Digifant fuel injection which is really nice.

very tasteful ensemble. really dig the econoline. beautiful. none of those in aus.
sh$tload of a f sprint veloces down here but. all of them very rusty. truckloads of alfa suds and alfa 33s as well. all of them split and shear the metal fair across the front shock towers tearing open the front guards (fenders). great engines. dubious bodies. but who am i to talk, owner of a car with the genuine potential to open a hole to hell.

Windshield extension to route air up and over your head. When I am on the bike at freeway speeds, I don't get buffeted at all. I purchased the bike as you see it (now has just over 8k miles). It came with the aftermarket (oem style) tall windshield with extension added. The extension is adjustable depending on the rider.

My love of air cooled VW's was my path to my 914's. In 1984, when I was 18, I bought a 1959 VW ragtop Beetle from a former employee of the head shop I was working at. That was my daily driver for years, and the car I was driving when I met my wife in 1986. It hasn't run in years, but I still have it. I've always intended to restore it, but life, garage space, and a creaky back have convinced me that is unlikely. So....ran across this 1962 ragtop for sale at the California Auto Museum and yesterday it came home with me. It joined my 1967 Karmann Ghia convertible in our garage in Berkeley. Here at our house in Richmond I have my Bumblebee and a pristine 1.8. With four cars I think I have now crossed the line from "enthusiast" to "collector." Thankfully (?) I'm now out of indoor parking
Here's the 1959 in its current condition. Just redid the brakes and have been working on getting the engine running so it can be driven on to a transporter. When warmer weather comes around I'll start trying to find a new steward for it, someone who will actually restore it. A cancer free original California car so it shouldn't be too much a challenge..

I will be adding this back to the collection in a few months. 83 ROW SC with a built 3.2 motronic, LSD, other track goodies. My son bought this from me a few years ago but he's exiting the military and starting a business later this year so he needs the $$'s. I'll be putting this back to a more comfortable street configuration. Replacing poly bushings with rubber, remove roll bar and put the interior back to stock. Maybe add AC. I'll be selling my GT Tribute and likely my 70 1.7 to make room.

The joy of driving these very different Porsches and the 914 is beyond description. Both of the cars dropped "out of the sky" on me by friends when I was looking for neither one - but their incredible condition and great prices necessitated that I buy both 5 months apart. You could not find better cars looking for many years. Could not be more happy with both.
Then there is this that I've had for 11 years - closest thing to perfect car.......

Then there is this that I've had for 11 years - closest thing to perfect car....... all stock (except full leather interior) and 5spd… best cruiser we own.

Yours looks like darker red which I much prefer. Like my 914. My 928 is Indie Red, now known as Guards Red. What color is yours?
I'm actually thinking of having mine re-painted in 881 (I think) Metallic Red which is both darker and metallic.....

great cars.
there is one near me here that a guy owns with historic plate registration. they never had the seats in the back tray down here. illegal even in the 70s/80s to ride in the back of a ute. its illegal to even have your dog ride in the load tub unless its tied up to the tub frame somehow.

Its a 1969 honda CT90 original paint I cut the rear fender all of the electronics were moved inside the frame for a cleaner look, as well as lots of detail efforts to cut mounts, and clean up the frame for a sleek appearance
motor is the lifan 125cc, with better gearing for top speed. and its getting a 3 foot long chrome custom exhaust with a fishtail outlet and bullet style LED tail lights. (sort of custom hotrod look)
lots of parts were backdated to the older style of bike including the rack, down tube cover, center stand, etc.

but there are quite a few type 34s still around down here. they seemed to manage to sell a surprising amount of those in aus. and enough of them survive. i love running into type 34 owners down here. they also seem to be right into 914s. had a very interesting conversation with a type 34 owner a year back. he seemed to be obsessed with my L jet 1.8 having never seen that engine until his cast his eyes upon mine.
type 34s had to be just about the most luxurious VW made in the 1960s. never exported to the USA i understand?

Thanks! It was not quite so tasteful when I got it but rust-free so I went for it.
I don’t believe I have ever seen a type 34 live (unless you want to count Corvairs haha). It seems the price point was high for a VW, you could have a Type 34 … or a Corvette, your choice.
I seem to think I can live with imperfections and non-stock items but then I come to the realization that they are keeping me up at night. Where do I get those stock textured seats?

When my wife, who won't drive any of my cars, said she has decided she wanted a fun car I knew I had to drop everything and go on a mission to find something for her before Xmas. Her cars are both practical dog cars (she competes in obedience competitions with our two German Shepherds and is an AKC obedience judge) and while she loves my VWs and 914's she doesn't feel comfortable driving them. Here's what I brought home for her two days ago...a 2014 Mazda Miata Grand Touring with a power retractable hard top. Just under 26K miles, garage kept, fully maintained and loved. It is pristine, no rust, no accidents, not even a spilled drop of coffee. The woman I bought it from actually shed tears when she signed the title. I shed tears when we wrote the check, but the fact that my wife has had an ear to ear smile on her face for the past 24 straight hours made it worth every penny. Top down driving today with the heat going and the heated seats on was comfortable and we weren't cold, so year round driving here is realistic. It has amazing handling and more than enough power for her style of driving. I've got to make room for her car in one of the garages so I'll probably have a 1967 Karmann Ghia convertible for sale soon. It is a bit of a bummer to have to give up a car, but well worth it to see how happy she is.

You KICKED ASS!
That critter is the last year of the NC body style. "Last" year of anything is ALWAYS the most reliable. All the bugs have been worked out and the dealer will get 10-15 TSBs on it; all nit-noy stuff. New body style the next year will have OVER 1000!
It's FLAWLESS and has extremely low miles. Good color and the power top too!
I'm a Miata nut as well, I have 4, all the previous body (NB).
Mazda really got a bunch of stuff right when they went "NC". The car got bigger, especially in the interior. More/better creature comforts.
You can put bigger rubber on an NC with less BS over a NB.
NCs do better on track than NBs (at the same level of prep) 5-10% better... The chassis is stiffer, brakes are better.
You found a box stock almost concours one!
And you NAILED the "Christmas gift" better than ever before and maybe ever after.
10 years from now that will be an "Investment" if it is still in as good condition as it is now.
The kicker is I don't think you'll have to work on it much...

Yeah, I specifically went looking for an NC3 for that reason. Let someone else work the bugs out. Finding this one was much more than I could have hoped for. It's as close to concours as I've ever seen and the lowest mileage example of all the ones I've seen since I started looking. I had to drop everything to go get a car cover for it today until it can be safely stowed away in the garage. I'm sure one of my cars would have been kicked out if it weren't for the fact that Hagerty requires they be garage stored. It's mainly for our 35th wedding anniversary, but it will cover the holiday present as well.

Perhaps the finest automobile I have owned, the only weak point is tires and wheels.
Since I purchased - new in '18 I have 32K miles and:

There is a reason there are so many SUV/Trucks in New England, I drive this car every day. I know where every pot hole is......

NICE Beetle! Looks like you did a great job on the restoration. Lots of us here also own VWs. Here are mine. I'm the third owner of the 1967 Karmann Ghia convertible. A survivor car, never restored, 146K original miles on it. All records from day 1. The picture of the 1962 ragtop is from when it was in the for sale section at the California Auto Museum. I couldn't resist. A beautiful restoration and a car that always draws a crowd.
Just finished reading your rustoration thread. I really hope you get to finish that car.

I have one of these:
Has been abused and modified... Still working on Un-DAPO'ing some stuff, other modified stuff I will leave.
Has throttle body EFI, aluminum radiator with electric puller fan, stainless gas tank, alternator replacing the generator, Pertronix coil and points replacement. Power brakes and steering, Fordomatic 3-speed. Had disc brakes, had to change them back to drums to get the car to pass inspection here. Had aftermarket A/C, ripped that out - don't need it here.
This winter will be adding rear sway bar and replacing the front with a stiffer one, add self-adjusters to the drum brakes and some more interior work.
Definitely turns heads when I drive it around here.
Guess I should add one of these too...

I have some of them done, but most are still works in progress. 1) my daily driver, she is my true love. 15 years of daily driver flawless service! 2004 4Runner. 2) My first car from 1986 that I still have. Building it for my now 17 years old daughter. It’s a 74 Sun Super Bettle. Has 2110 turbo, 220 hp on water dyno 3) 1979 911sc Max Moritz German born import. Finished painting about a year ago, but this is how she still sits. 4) 1969 beetle with 2.5L turbo STI forged stuffed into it. Crazy amount of fab work. Done with everything but body and paint. 5) 1998 C5 naturally aspirated 470rwhp on the dyno….so much fun! 6) 1972 CJ5 lifted on 39.5’s with hydraulic assisted steering and 4 wheel disk brakes. First V8 that Jeep made AMC 304. 7) My daughters go kart 8) Dads go kart with forged internals of course..lol 9) 2006 Buell 1250 scg 10) 2006 Screamin’ Eagle V-rod 11-12) YSR 50 and the yellow one is a YSR with a IT 175 2 stroke 6 speed with custom frame and reinforced swing arm. Clocked at 87 mph in a 25 speed limit by local policemen in my neighborhood. He let me go 13) 1991 FZR 400 with 632 big bore Wiseco motor stuffed into it. Also very fun little corner ripper that I take to the Dragon in Tennessee every couple of years. I do all my own work on everything and nothing has stickers on them…all paint. Oh yeah…and last but not least the 74 2.0 Olympic blue 914 that I’m currently building a 2056 for.
Love the Buell. I bought a 1996 S1 Lightning new and kept it for 20 years. When I sold my commercial shop in 2016, I needed space in the barn at home. A close friend had been hounding me to purchase it and I sold it to him at a very weak moment. I bought a Yamaha Venture as a COVID project which I got running well but at 800+ pounds, it was way too heavy for me to be comfortable on and it was top heavy as well. The Indian FTR that I purchased early this year was a very good replacement for the Buell. It has a 6 inch longer wheelbase it’s not as nimble but with 120 hp it’s a riot!!! I guess I have a grudge against HD since they closed Buell.

Some seriously nice cars in here.
I finished building a Lotus 7 replica about three years ago. It’s a scratch build (no kit) powered by a Miata 1.8L turbo drivetrain. Weighs roughly 1350lbs. Link to build thread: https://www.locostusa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=17715

That is a Datsun Z-car! Look at the doors and window trim.
I've almost bought one in the past. Wish I did.
Of note: The original "Z-car" design was for Ferrari. They rejected it and chose the Daytona. That is the reason the engine compartment is the length it is. It was designed for a "skinny V12" and is long enough for anything. Bunch of V8s are too wide but nothing is too long...
My Dad and I visited Joe Alphabet's shop in Huntington Beach in the mid 80s.
We were expecting a fiberglass shop; my dad was big into fiberglass.
It was a Ferrari restoration shop first and a glass shop second. Tons of cool real Ferraris everywhere.
The Alpha One was the very best kit made IMO.
I believe Ferrari ate him for lunch before it was over...

I would buy and drive that specifically because it’s not a real Ferrari….what a cool copy/kit

A future project that I’ve had for 5 years now….
Classy looking Hudson. The early NASCAR boys used to hate seeing those show up at the track. Twin H power?
No Twin H, just a standard 6 single carb. The body will be going on a modern drivetrain.

Almost all original, mint 1980 928 5-speed. I added 16" Club Sport wheels.
Almost all original, Concours 1986 944 Turbo purchased from original owner.
Almost all original, mint (does not use or leak oil) 1987 944 S. I added 993 Cup II wheels.
Owned for over 11 years 2011 Cayman S w/PDK, Sport Chrono, Bose, Sony head unit w/CarPlay & back-up cam, 19" Carrera Turbo II wheels, Softronics ECU Remap for 355+hp - no need for newer one, close to perfect car
Am I spoiled? Yes. Interesting note: ONLY ONE of these cars was I looking for - the Cayman - my 2nd. ALL others (including my almost Concours 914) I was not seeking to buy, but were found by friends who notified me of their availability each at a cost far below value - so much so that I could not pass them up just for investment reasons.
I am a blessed man. 944 S is available - who needs 2 944's?

1977 FJ40. I picked this up fairly recently and have been going through it fixing a few things here and there, but overall it is very solid.

Love the ole Jeep J10 truck. Don’t see those on the road very often and when you do they are shot out! Yeah the FZR 400/632 was my attempt to get back on the road with something I could actually ride after being totaled out on my GSR750. Always rode those before the wreck, but way too heavy and tall for broken hips and pelvis and titanium legs…lol. The 400 is light and small and with the 632, she’s a ripper at Deal’s Gap!

ooooo nice, I sold my FZR400 before I got it 100% sorted, but did once plan on doing a 442cc kit on my bandit 400...but sold that too. Crazy drivers around here and having a kid. Now I just have old 2-stroke Ducati projects I need to make into my city bikes.
