This is my blog and this is what I think about that...

Everyone here does an pretty good job of self-policeing lately. This is not a free speak issue. This board is privately owned and run and we are all guests here. Play by the rules or go start your own board.

OT Threads: Just what is considered OT? Being that this is a car board I would think just about anything not related to cars is OT. I use the Sandbox for all very OT topics. When it is car related I post in the Garage. When I post in the Garage and it is not 914 related or car related I lable it OT. If I find a site or post a picture of a car or tools or something I still post in the Garage. Because the Garage is about cars, tools, P-cars, etc. But if I need help with my computer or taxes or my want to list my favorte dance song I do it in the SandBox. Nothing in the Sandbox should be labled OT. If I find a joke that may offend someone I post it in the Sandbox in the "Do Not Look " thread.

BTW: I have no problem looking or seeing naked women. But I think I should be the one that decides when I should view them.

Thread Labling: Several months ago I started a thread and complained that people need to better explain the subject or topic of thier thread. Naming a thread "Look what I did" and than it being about how they built a rock garden is not right.

More to follow...

This weekend is the PCA Club race at the track in Sebring. This is my annual trek to get it weighed. So I need to get a few things done before I can present it to the masses. Those 911 Club racers can to a tough crowd for a 914 guy.

I need to:
1. fix the gas drip at the pump. (done)
2. Paint the rockers yellow. Done
3. Get the trunk covered or painted black (painted today)
4. Install the dzus fastenrs on the body panels. I have three more to do.
5. Weld the tonneu cover support to the roll bar. (Done)
6. Paint the wheels centers black (Done)

Super Bowl Sunday...PAINT! PAINT! PAINT!clap56.gif

Last night I painted the front hood, the tonnaeu cover and both one-piece sides.

Results: from best to worst...

Tonnaeu cover: Paint is thin but no orange peel, I'll keep it.
Front hood: Orange peel, but only a few thin spots. I'll keep it as is.
Left side: a few sags and orange peel, but no thin spots. Repaint it.
Right side: OMG! Did I do this with my eyes shut? Sigs all over, thin spots where you can see the primer and orange peel llike 30 grit samd paper. Complete sand and repaint required.

I reshot the left side this morning. Much better job. But I'll have to spend a few nights working on the right side before being able to reshoot it.

I primed the sides and the front hood last Saturday. Planning on final paint this weekend.
After priming I found several areas that need work but will be easily fixed before the weekend.
If you think your car is ready to paint, roll it out into the sun and you'll see you hav e more work to do. sad.gif

I'm progressing on getting it ready to paint and one item that I need to finish is the "tonneau cover" over the passenger seat area. I decided to add these two NACA ducts that I have been carrying around with me for 15 years. They are fiberglass and will mold in to the cover real easy. I don't know if they will really do anything but they may suck some air down into the engine. I'll tape some 3" hoses to them and stick the discharge end into the cooling fan.

I have to change the cover because I changed the roll bar supports. I used to have a big bar going to the top of the main hoop but that was changed and lowered to the center. This required the cover to be changed. It now can be molded to match the left side radius and I'm adding a 3/8" edge flange for strength. I'm kinda going for the 908-3 look.

The Gunnar 914-6 Pick-up.
These photos are VERY rare. Kevin Jeannette would not allow me take pictures of this car when I was at his shop. But I found these on another site. These photos show the car in the same condition as it was when I saw in the summer of '05. We talked more about this car than the other 904's, 935's, 906's that were in his shop at the time. He said he gets visitors from all over that go thru the shop, but I was the first to want to talk about the 914 P/U. laugh.gif He said he would never sale it, but he would give it to his son to have.

I told him about the 914club and he said he would one day come on the board and tell the whole story of it.

Ran an Autocross today.
First run: Clutch slipping like crazy. Only needed adjustment.

Second run: Damn thing wouldn't start. The little battery wouldn't turn my new engine over, too much compression. Gotta change back to the other battery. So some guys push started me. Clutch better but still some slipping. Clean run no cones.

Third run: Clutch is really hooking up and I was flying. Than at about the 3/4 mark, the gas pedal goes to the floor and the engine dies. I check it out and the bracket at the cable and the gas pedal has bent and the ball/socket has come off. I don't have a "stop" behind my gas pedal and when I pushed the pedal too far it bent the bracket.

So I need to fab a bracket for a gas pedal stop. If I had the stock floor board that goes behind the pedal, it wouldn't have happened. I'll make it so the stop is a bolt that can be adjusted in or out so the pedal stops when the carb linkage is fully open.

BTW, my second run with the slipping clutch was good enough for the 3rd overall quickest time. biggrin.gif

RAT Engine Install:

cool_shades.gif 8/12/05: I've started the work to install my Killer RAT. The car is back on jackstands. I've removed the carbs and header. I'll drop my old tired/worn engine out this weekend. I have a list of details that I need to address before I can paint the engine area and the rear sub-frame. Than I'll be able to install the engine.

biggrin.gif 8/14/05: Dropped the engine and cleaned up some of the engine bay details. A little welding, a little bondo and a little primer. Photo #1 is the engine sitting on the dolly.

unsure.gif 8/21/05: Worked on cleaning up the engine bay. I fab'd some small sheet metal pieces that hide my ugly welding at the rear shock mounts. The forth pic from the left shows this piece. Also started painting the rear tubing. I'm using Rustolum Industral Red in the big cans. Looks good. Also removed the rear shocks/springs and cleaned them up. I need to cover/fill some of the holes in the lower firewall. These were the e-brake cable, heater box cables, and the big hole that the wiring harness went thru. I'm trying to clean up the entire area. I'm also slowly stripping down my engine and transfering parts to the RAT.

rocking nana.gif 8/23/05: Welded in a piece of sheet metal to clean up the center section of the firewall that had been cut out. This is where my wires run between the passenger compartment and the engine. Also finished the sheetmetal at the rightside shock tower and bondo'd it in so it's clean. Removed the rear brake lines to paint the front of the engine bay. I'm actully making pretty good progress. Maybe I can get the engine in theis weekend. (yea, right)

welder.gif 8 /28/05: I had to fabricate a modified right front engine mounting bracket. Full flow pumps have the oil line exiting right into the side of the stock bracket. I used copper pipe nipples and fittings to extend the hose barbed fittings away from the pump. I felt the pipe nipples needed to be supported, so I welded on some tabs and put clamps around the pipe. Holds everything nice and tight.

wavey.gif 8/29/05; Last night I welded in the support between the inside trailing arm support ear and the firewall. Tonight I'll be able to prime and paint the remainder of the engine bay. I've also cleaned up and reinstalled the rear shocks and springs. I worked on modifing the fan housing to lighten it up by removing some of the stiffening ribs and I drilled some holes in it. It is made of cast aluminum so it is pretty light in the first place. I shouldn't be wasting my time on it but it looks better when it is cleaned up.

smash.gif 8/30/05: Painted the left side engine bay. Also removed the stub pipes for the header from the existing engine. Found one to be cracked, so I'll need to weld that up. Removed the tranny from the engine. I need to clean up the tranny before I install it on the new engine. Easy-off oven cleaner seems to be the best thing to use.

headbang.gif 9/1/05: I was going to install the oil cooler and realized I need to get new seals. Than I was going to install the header stub pipes and realized I don't have any of the oval copper seals at the exhaust ports. DAMN! I did finish painting the engine bay. Really RED. I also drilled holes in my 1.7 sheetmetal for the 2.0 head's sparkplug locations. I'll have to weld up the 1.7 holes. welder.gif Man, this crap is s-l-o-w going.

welder.gif 9-2-05: Picked up the parts and installed the exhaust stub pipes. Found that one of the exhaust studs were broken. Not all the way down at the head but just enough that I can't get a nut on with the stub pipe on. But with a little grinding to make the pipe shorter and filing on the mounting tab I was able to get a nut on with about two turns. I welded up the cracked stub pipe also. I tested it with water to make sure there were no pin holes. It took about four times before it was completey filled. I cleaned the tranny with EZ-Off oven cleaner. I had never used it before, I think its better than Gunk. I applied it several times and washed it off with the hose. It etches the aluminum and leaves it very clean. I used the whole can on it and it was all I needed. Today was a very good day I also, installed the hard brake lines in the engine bay, installed studs for the rockers, cleaned up the engine tin, made covers to go over the 1.7 spark plug holes, removed the clutch and P-plate from my old engine, installed the oil lines on the engine that will go to the remote filter, installed the oil cooler ith the new seals.

happy11.gif 9-12-05: Been working since the last update on the engine tin, fan housing, valve train. I needed to get new heavy duty studs for the rocker arm shafts. After talking to Jake, the stock 6mm studs will not handle the dual valve springs that are on the heads. I ordered a set of his HD studs (9mm) and nuts. He is also sending me a set of 911 adjusters. I used my grinder to clean up the fan housing by grinding off some of the tabs and stuff. I also had a few guys over abfer our 914 breakfast get together and we lifted the engine off the stand and down onto a rolling cart. I'll now be able to install the clutch and pp and mount the tranny to it. Once I get the 911 adjusters installed I'll than be able to bolt it into the car. I'm hoping to get this done this weekend.

lol2.gif 9-13-05: I took the day off from work and got the engine tin painted and installed, the push rods installed, installed the clutch and PP, engine bolted to the tranny, and the engine in the car!!! Actually just the rear tranny bolts are installed but it is the ready to lift up to the front bar mounts. I'm also changing out some hardware. The engine mounting bolts are too long so I'm getting shorter ones

aktion035.gif 9-17-05: Bolted on the carbs, installed fuel line and cable, installed header, oil filter bracket, adjusted valves, filled with oil, fab'd new wiring plate, etc, ect, etc.
Ready to start it tomorrow! clap.gif

huh.gif 10-7-05: Cut new push rods and installed the valve train.

clap.gif 10-8-05: Got it running!!!!

smilie_pokal.gif 10-9-05: Went to an a/x!!!! What a kick in the ass. Need to get it dialed in. but it was fast.

I picked up my Raby's Aircooled Technology engine yesterday. First pic is the engine on David's floor. Second is in the back of my truck. Others are of me jacking it up to get it high enough to go on the engine stand. You can do anything with enough 4x4's.
Rob Watson (watsonx13) came over to help out.
