Here are a couple of pictures of cars that are similar to what I'm doing on the turbo race car. The first two pics are of the diffuser tunnels from a 956/962s. The first is what came stock from Porsche. The front edge is at the bottom of the pic. The second is a devlopment part used by Dyson, I think. In this pic the front is at the top. The second is very similar to what will be under the 914. The forward edge will start just a wee bit ahead of the rear bulkhead. The next couple of pics show how the exhaust will be set up. These are also a 962s, early, single turbo versions. In the 914, the distance between the engine and the axle line is quite a bit shorter than this, but everything will fit in very similar manner. One of my buddies said his wife told him his 914 race car (currently in pieces) was like a puzzle with lots of pieces but no picture on the box. We decided that the turbo is a puzzle with a nice picture, but you have to make all the pieces. Well, I managed to get a some more pieces made this weekend.
I'm going to be keeping the CIS system to start with. The idea being to keep the engine as stock (reliable) as possible so I can get the chassis and aero dialed in without worrying about engine issues. Once it's driving well I'll start working on more power. Eventually it'll get electronic ECS, twin turbos, electronic boost controls, 600hp argh, argh, arGH, ARGH, ARGH!!!!! But for now its more Keeping the CIS means re-arranging things to fit in a 914 and one of the things that had to move was the CIS unit itself. I made the bracket to hold the unit off to the right this weekend. The turbo fits over the gearbox with the compressor side on the right. A short 90 deg. hose will connect the turbo to the CIS. The compressor outlet will feed straight into the intercooler that will sit over the center of the engine. The pics show the CIS mouned in it's new home and the turbo in it's final position, though still on blocks... (I don't have any jackstands small enough ) The other pics show the finished trans mount. Front and rear "ears" boxed in to provide some extra fore-aft stiffness. Enough rambling, here are the pics... Attached thumbnail(s)
Well, the engine/trans are OFFICIALLY in the car!!
The trans mount has been cut, bent, drilled, tweaked, trimmed, filed, ground and bolted! No more ratchet straps, no more jack stands holding the trans up off the deck. It's officially installed... There has been a bit more work done on the rear chassis/body as well. Less and less of the original 914 every day... Also had a few 'teeners come by the shop today. Front to rear: Rocky, Rpmmaxxed, Mugsey A few pics... Attached thumbnail(s)
Here are a few pics from the PCA club rave at Phoenix International Raceway last weekend. The yellow car is Bryan Clingman's new racecar. Unfortunatly tranny seals kept him on the trailer that weekend. The blue and silver car is Jim Patrick's from Patrick Motorsports. Super clean! Maybe Greg can help put names to the other cars??? Well, while everyone was off arguing about avatars, I got a bit done on the racecar...
The rear of the tube chassis has been finished. Now I'll start adding the small tubes that will support the wing, diffuser, fenders and such and getting rid of yet more sheet metal. On the inside, the dead pedal and left side leg support are done and that pretty much wraps up the driving position stuff. Still have to get the victim's... um, I mean, PASSENGER'S seat installed, and there's still the fire bottle and acceerator linkage. But for the most part the interior is done. Here da pics...
