I finished my dash wiring today so everything electrical is completed except running the battery cables from the front trunk to the starter area. I also repaired my clutch cable tube as it exits the firewall. I repaired the "fix" that the last owner had done now since I had the fuel lines out. I didn't do it 13 years ago when I repainted the car because I didn't pull the fuel lines and I was worried about melting the plastic lines. I will be running the stainless fuel lines through the center tunnel after I finish up the engine mount and floorboards. I will also be removing the battery tray and some useless brackets from the engine compartment while I'm in there. I'll probably rework some of my welds that I did 13 years ago. It's amazing how much you improve at welding with more experience. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

This weekend I spent a good deal of time blasting a front axle and A-arms so I an powdercoat them Monday evening at work (I found out about it Friday late). I also spent time welding on someone elses project taildragger.... I did work on and got nearly completed with my old 904 combo gauge kit. I set it up with old gauges before I transfer my good ones to it. This gauge will allow me to button up my wiring later on this week. After wiring, I will move on to welding in the engine mount, fixing/repairing the clutch tube that had been repaired by the previous owner. It works, but I have always hated how they did it. I will also start pulling in my stainless steel fuel lines and oil lines when the welding is completed. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() ![]() ![]()
02-25 & 26-2006
This weekend it doesn't look like I got much done, but I did get about 80% of my wiring done. I eliminated all the un-necessary wiring associated with the seat belt interlock relays (the car is a 1974). I am moving the battery to the front trunk so I had to extend wires and revamp the harness to get all the power cables up front. I have about 7 wires left + the main battery cable. I should be able to get to those in the evenings this week. I also made up spacers for my rear calipers to allow the use of SC rear rotors. My drawing is now proven to work out and I found longer bolts to use with the spacers. Perhaps next weekend, I'll finally get to the fuel lines and the engine mount... I started laying out how I want the Motronic to mount in the interior and after much contemplation, I decided to locate the items under the passenger seat. On the race car, I did something similar (OK, EXACTLY). Last winter my dad decided to shim the passenger seat up 3/4" in the track car to alow the pass. seat to clear the altitude correction box, so I will do that here as well. Here is the Motronic ECU, Altitude Corrector, and DME Relay loosely mounted to the floor. I used some clamps to hold the harness in place and to prevent the seat rails from squishing it. Day 2 (Sunday 02-19)
I drained and removed the fuel tank, cleaned up the front trunk area, and started removing interior items. I will be installing stainless fuel lines through the tunnel, relocating the battery to the front, installing my oil tank up front, and adding an oil cooler up front as well. I will also try getting my 5-lug suspension in this winter as well. If time permits, the flares will go on as well. A full repaint will happen sometime in the future after all cutting, welding, fabricating is completely tested and proven... Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
This weekend (02-18-2006) marks the last time my 914 would run as a 4-cyl car. My 1974 stock 2.0 ran for the last time on Saturday (02-18) when I parked it and promptly jacked it up and put it on jackstands.
This Blog will serve to publically document my progress as I convert the car with a 3.2 Carrera engine and eventually a 915 gearbox. Work started approximately 4:00PM Saturday 02-18 Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() ![]() ![]() |
