Thought I'd share my experiences with one of the more difficult-frustrating projects on a 914 the front header / a-post seal install.

I was so fortunate to secure an NOS early style front seal a few years ago for my 914-6 build and expected the usual stretch, fight, and praying the ends do not pull apart.

To be honest it was the best install I've ever done out of many. This "old" original seal was tight but fit perfectly in particular across the windshield header where all the AM versions seem too short and do not stay tight secure to the upper w/s frame.

The center section required zero stretch and thus the ends connections are not stressed. I think this is the biggest challenge facing all the current seals on the market.

One recent build at a well known shop said they had 2 Genuine and AM seals split at the ends where they meet the a-post seal. One split months after it was successfully installed.

If the after market or Porsche Classic could reproduce this seal accurately then all 1970-73 owners would be very happy campers.

On Memorial Day my brother and I took my car to Danville for the PCA Diablo Region Wash 'n Shine at the Danville Livery. This is their annual event and it always well attended with a lot of Porsche cars of all years. I hate taking pictures but here are a few.
It is about 113 miles one-way but surprisingly very little traffic in both directions. However, as we were traveling east on 80, headed home, the traffic going west was horrible the entire trip - I felt bad for all of those people heading that direction. So glad we were going the opposite direction.

Tackled the push rod tube seals with the engine in the car on my 74 1.8. I was able to get all the push rod tubes out with no issues even after watching videos of folks saying that they had to leave a few of them partially in the engine to replace the o-rings because they were not able to remove the push rod all the way. Adjusted all the valves. I also installed a new Awesome Powdercoat thermostat bellows and new control cable (Shimano derailleur bike cable thanks to a few members on the Facebook page). Tested the new thermostat after setting the flaps to the cold position, removed slack in the cable and secured it with the cable holder. Heated the thermostat up with a heat gun and the flaps open to full open when the thermostat is fully expanded. Still have to put the car back together and take it for a run now.

@Dlee6205

Hey, Doug those look great! I have a set that yet I have not painted or installed. How hard was it to drill out your mounting holes and what paint did you use, is that Wurth Satin black trim paint? I am considering finally installing mine.

I needed a way to keep the duct work sealed and be able to remove the duct work for maintenance. So I had a little fun and made this.

Not so much what I did to it, but what I did for it... I bought a used CoverKing moving blanket cover from another member and I liked it so much I thought I'd got one for each of our other cars. Then, found out they were $500 each (IMG:style_emoticons/default/yikes.gif) So, being a CSOB and also owning a sewing machine I ordered a pack of a dozen good quality moving blankets and made my own. Not as nicely fitted, but every bit as functional. I made a cover for both 914s, my Beetle, as well as my wife's pristine low mileage 2014 Miata. Total cost was ~$125. Now I don't have to be as paranoid every time I carry something through our tight garages.

So, a while ago, we raised my car about 5/8" as I felt it was low. Then life got in the way and I forgot to get it re-alined. I just took it to Hewitt's Alinement Service in Stockton. Old school shop that works on a lot of nice old cars. They were recommended by a good friend, Mike Moss, who has been using them for a very long time on his Porsches.

I went in and met Tony, the owner, and told him the car felt a bit "squirmy" on the road, like it was nervous. Their mechanic, Stewart, handled the job and was very methodical, checking and setting everything front and rear. Took him about 1.5 hours. He is a 4th generation mechanic in his family and their top guy.

I took it for a ride and it was a dramatic change. The car tracks straight and seems well planted now. My brother noticed the difference from the passenger seat immediately. Needless to say, I am very happy with their work.

Lovely car and you're lucky to have such a nice facility to do your alignments. Old school spin balancer in the first photo takes me back to bias ply tires and $.62/gallon gasoline.(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads/post-9712-1780079866_thumb.jpg)

Finally got the sealing plate done at the bottom. It goes this way and that, going to take the dremel and hours to clean it up. So that’s all the fab on this. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

I was at the Old Town (Auburn)Cruise Night and a guy started talking to me about my car. Turns out he works for the Sacramento Porsche Dealership. I have never been there as Rocklin is closer to me. Sacramento has been open for about 1 year. He invited me to enter my car in their Concours on June 7th. Since I have never been there I thought what could it hurt? Anyway, now I am doing a little light cleaning to hopefully make a good showing and not embarrass my car. We drive this car and have about 19K miles on it since it was restored. Good Luck.

I never understood why there was no light in the frunk. Yesterday I restored the trunk light off the the OG 1972. I was going to swap it for the one out of the 1971. Had a Phillips screw driver in my hand and it hit me again...Why didn't they put a light in the frunk? It wouldn't look bad and I can use the power from the side light I will not be using. So I ordered plunge switches, one for the trunk light and one for this:
