I am pretty sure that this is the original plate because I have had this car since Oct. 1977. I looked at the vin number and it is around the middle of the range for the vin numbers of 75 cars.

I listed it with the 1975 car but plates probably issued in 1976, maybe car sat on the dealer lot for a few months before selling, or maybe it was a dealer demonstrator car

Andy, were you the original owner of that 6? If so, did you buy it in ‘71? That’s the only way the plate could be original to that car.

QUOTE I spoke too soon, i actually found a pic with the original license plate on the car! 218 DJW Perhaps /6 #374 also sat around on the dealers lot for a few months before it received its plates. We need to consider that this list can only study the issued order of license plates by DMV in its rough and approximate order that we have categorized by model years, and that there appears to be minor timing overlaps where an earlier car received a sequentially later plate. it is reasonable to recognize a minor amount of tolerance in the timing of when an original plate was issued, relative to the model year of the car - because the process is inexact. Contributing factors are that certain cars may have sat unsold on dealers lots for awhile and that plates were sent to every DMV office in the state in small groupings, which resulted in plates not having been issued in perfect sequence by VIN number. As long as its a close enough match I think its reasonable and that is the real benefit to this study. |

There are several plate restorers - google can find them for you. I used Mojo, they did a marginal job to my eye...surely there is someone better.

I bought a car just to get the plates off of it. They were a perfect matching set of California blue plates. The car was a 74 1.8 L. But it was in terrible condition. It had been sitting in the high desert in Nevada for a long time. After I got it home and had the plates checked, it had about a mountain of back DMV fees. Well over $600 I believe. Now they just hang on my wall all shiny and blue.
If you look at the photo some genius used a piece of nylon rope and ran it into the car, through the firewall to control the throttle on the engine, from inside the car. That was a first for me to see that. Is there any way to make these DMV fees disappear? A friend of mine who ran the plate number for me and found out all this information said absolutely not. He said that they do drop off but since he ran the plates that resets the timer on the back fees. Total shame because both the plates are perfect. There's not even a scratch on them. I really wanted to put them on my 74 2 liter. The guy I bought my car from wouldn't give me the original blue plates.....dick move. MB Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() ![]() |

Yeah, what my plan was was to get a personalized plate that was 237 VZC and then just use the Blue Plate instead of the modern California white plates. That's no longer an option since that number still has back fees on it. And they've stopped the use of 3# 3 letter combos for that reason.

Pretty sure these are original on my '73. Either way, they're staying on it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)
