Awesome! I've always enjoyed this build, now even more! What are you planning to do with the 2.5 and the wiring harness? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) I have a ton of pictures if anyone is interested. Not sure how I missed this thread with the upgrade! Great deal on the combo you are taking out, this new setup should be a blast. Great progress as always, you know how to put us lazy people like me to shame (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Oh trust me , Laziness is one of my talents! The war department (wife) has a way of motivating me. " Get the car running or get rid of it" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
I would have to say the new setup is pretty awesome. I put the hurt on a Subaru STI yesterday from a 5 mph rolling start. The STI thought that they would try and impress and old man in an old car. Not to day! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) I broke the tires loose shifting into second. Haha. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) I had them by 5 or 6 car lengths by the time we hit 85. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) I did finally listed the 2.5l in the classifieds for what I have into just the Outfront Motorsports parts. I feel like it is a good deal. Essentially a free motor, alternator and exhaust system. I did put a ton of work into flipping the intake manifold and building custom brackets. |

ap
question? if the cradle was 1 inch closer to engine, would the exhaust your're using interfere with cradle? is you exhaust an ebay special or brand name? i ask because i am thinking about mass fabricating a cradle along the lines of sawtooth's, in stainless steel, except for the stock subaru trans bracket. thanks Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() Attached image(s) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Hey Jim,
I can't be positive but I think it would clear. I don't have the 2.5L installed in my car anymore or I would measure the clearance for you. I did find a few more pictures of the install. I purchase my header second hand so am I not sure what brand it is. It appears to be the same one in your post. It would be awesome if you started to offer cradles. It is a definite need in the conversion world. ![]() |

as for your 6 and coldwater's cradle and trans hangers.
did you have to modify the cradle or hangers to fit engine and or trans into your car? I see you have to make some sweet exhaust from scratch. your pic Attached image(s) ![]() |

No modification to the cradle was necessary to install the 6 cylinder. The coldwater cradle works but there are a few things that I would change if I was going to redesign it.
The area around the exhaust is very tight . It is hard to get the exhaust system to exit the head and clear the cradle. If you use the stock subaru engine mounts to attach the engine to the cradle, then the motor is soft mounted to the cradle and the the transmission is hard mounted to the cradle via the transmission hangers. The cradle is soft mounted to the car via the stock 914 mounts. I think it would make more sense to solid mount the engine to the cradle and let the cradle soft mount to the car. Or hard mount the cradle to the car and add soft mounts to the transmission hangers. As it is now I feel like a lot of stress is transmitted through the transmission hangers and into the cradle. |

I am using two Dynomax mufflers. It really does sound pretty good. I tried to keep it as quiet as possible.

The trick to quiet is small tubes. Iim running 2.5" all the way back and even with three mufflers there is a lot of drone. Sounds great when I'm wailing on it though...
I will be moving to headers like Ray's in the near future. Much more enjoyable all around. |
