What is involved in getting rid of the large 75 bumpers in favor of the smaller chrome bumpers from any of the earlier years?

I have these bumpers on my '75:

I'd like to convert the bumpers to any of the earlier styles. This one is nice:

There is a huge amount of info here in these searches. Not too hard of a process at all. Look forward to seeing your progress thread! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

Thank you Eric, very much.

I totally missed the term "backdating" and you are very kind to point me in the right direction.

You might want to look here too for polished stainless steel which should never rust -

- with or without the "Tits" (bumper guards), although most folks backdating go to the "tit-less" variety.

If that's your Viper (?) Green 914 in the pic & it's otherwise in VG-Excl condition & mostly original, then you need to be aware that backdating the bumpers & other "customization" can negatively affect the car's value in the long run - especially for hard to reverse ones. If you still decide to do so, then save all of the original parts for a future "go back" by you or ruture owner.

The process is not that difficult, I have a 75 and completed the backdating. I did not spend alot on the bumpers as my paint scheme was a simple black and white. I simply bought a front and rear bumper on e-bay stripped them down welded the holes shut, I am Floridian so I can delete the front plate. fixed any dings primed and painted black. The weight savings is good, I believe the look to be cleaner and simpler but others may argue that they like the big bumpers. I personally only like the big bumpers on a black 914... my opinion only.
Take your time and make sure everything is thoroughly thought out and pre fit before drilling.
Hey if I can do it how hard could it be....now getting the fog light bracket bolt fastened below the light was a really piece of work!!!!!!

Good Luck,
